Does anyone know why the product flopped so much?

Apple then is not what apple is now. MS ruled the world and just put out a product that had been 4 revisions behind what they already knew in the ipod at the time.

they moved to windows OS (which wasn't bad pre-iphone) and it was forgotten about.

From an 08 article:

1) The Zune Pass
2) No Generational Gaps(this is about upgrades)
3) Price
4/5/6/ Wireless sharing/sync/shopping
7) Customization
8) FM radio
9) Xbox compatibility
10) You can create games?

I never used either.

Apple had the momentum and the cool factor. The Zune HD's demise was ensured by the lack of apps. FFS, that thing didn't even have an internal speaker.

i bought my daughter a zune and she loved it until someone at her school stole it.

i liked it quite a bit myself but then again i hate the ipod interface with a passion.

I had every form factor the Zune came in. I finally bailed when it became clear the Zune HD was no iPod Touch and never would be. While I never liked Apple's click wheel, the Touch and iTunes were far superior to Microsoft's junk.

The irony is that zune was the 1st product that I recall that had the zune pass that gave you unlimited music for a monthly fee. Apple scoffed at that back then and now I'm paying Apple for a family music pass in 2016. Ironic, huh?!

I had a Rio player and Rhapsody sunscription in like 2003 or 2004.

Zune came out in 2006.

I meant in comparison to Apple, who's the leader. Apple has done well with not really innovating anything but mastering others innovations.

Remember when Microsoft worked hard on the PlaysForSure DRM system so that all non-Apple MP3 players could use the same standard DRM scheme, and then they released the Zune which didn't work with PlaysForSure and had to use Microsoft's proprietary Zune DRM?

Good times

Zune is still pretty recent.

I rocked this bad boy in Middle School around 2002 or so.

This was before the iPod. Everyone thought it was the coolest thing ever and wanted to use it. Listening to it before football/basketball/baseball games and track meets was the best.

Had 32 megabytes of storage could fit like 12 songs on there. But I didn't care. It got stolen in 2004, by that time it was outdated(iPod was starting to gain traction and had gigabytes of storage) so it wasn't too big of a deal.
