Why are simple mp3 players extinct?

Does no one else want to just have a dedicated music player without apps and wifi and video screens and streaming?

I have been hunting for months to find a simple music only mp3 player for my kids for Christmas. Why is this a seemingly impossible task? I was going to buy myself one as well to use when working out and doing work around the house when I don’t want me phone to distract me.

I do not want to give my young kids full access to the internet and high definition video in their pockets, I thought it would be fun to give them a portable music player but that seems to not even exist anymore?

Any suggestions on a music player for the kids that doesn’t connect to the internet?

Just buy a portable cd player and burn them music?

Amazon appears to have a lot of options

Yeah unfortunately they all have under 4 star reviews with the negatives all being a UI too complicated or they’re made so cheap they break in a week

I’m leaning heavily to the CD player idea

Maybe I’ll buy a refurbished iPod on eBay

How young are your kids? Building one from an Arduino platform would be a cool project.

8 and 6. They both take music lessons so I want to give them music players they can use to practice as well as listen to music when they want.

I’d be ok with this. Any suggestions?

Not off the top of my head. But it would be better if they were 10-12. They could help alot more at that age.

I'll google around and if I find anything I'll post it.

Honestly, I wouldn’t want them with earbuds that young. Kids that age already pay very little attention at exactly the wrong moments. It creates an excuse to ignore adults on top of what kids regularly do.

You could get a Sonos or Denon 150 (with or without voice control) and Spotify Kids and stick it in their playroom or whatever.

I bought one that's waterproof last year for Christmas. They do exist.

I miss the old iPad shuffle. It was great for running. I’m not going to run with my phone attached to me.

I was a Zune bro. I wish someone had bought the license for the hardware.

Go Here, and get an ipod classic or shuffle and call it a day.

You can create your own... let them make it "theirs" as far as colors etc go.

Apple library management finally pushed me over the edge after it deleted all of my playlists using local MP3s after I unsubscribed from Apple Music.

Although, if he’s going the Apple route, wouldn’t it be simpler to dump songs onto a cheap Apple Watch than try and deal with a remanufactured iPod with a 30 pin connector?

Yeah, probably... plus with the Ipod, you have to use wired earbuds. Didn't think about that. A dock takes care of the 30 pin problem. Well, makes it a tad easier. Also, most kids probably prefer wireless. Unless you use a bluetooth adapter. Which just makes it just a tad bigger. But works great. To ME, and my unsophisticated ears, the Ipod Classic 7th gen sounds better than the Iphone.

Or... get away from Apple and go all in.

It’s probably difficult to create and market a commercially viable device who’s sole purpose is to play pirated software.

Spotify has some sort of player my SO was telling me about the other day. It's locked down and can only play preapproved playlists

Holy hell. I remember in the cassette days we had $150+ built like a tank cassette players that couldn’t be dropped more than a 1/4 inch onto a bed of empty egg crates, but damn.

I wanted to believe in MD, I really did. But HD-DVD taught me a lesson before I went Sony stupid.
