Why am I getting 1/5 of the download speed I pay for? [Solved]

I pay for 500, barely pull 100. Connected via ethernet. My roommate gets well over 500 down. I went to get a new cat6 cable and that changed nothing. I've got an Asus prime Z490 motherboard which allows up to 2.5gbps down. We have the Panoramic Wifi Gateway from Cox. I have no clue what to do.

Connected directly to the gateway or is there a switch between?
When you say "barely pull 100", does that mean just above or just below 100? If just below, check your network connection status and see what it reports as the connection speed. It's possible the connection is negotiating at 100mbps rather than gigabit. If you are getting just over 100, then you are likely connected at gigabit and the problem is something else.

Connected directly to the gateway. Checked the connection status, ethernet 8, speed: 1 Gpbs.
The speeds fluctuate when I test them, some tests are under 100, some are over 100.
I have a wifi adapter plugged into the mobo, would that affect anything?

If your roommate's computer is also hardwired I would swap the ports on the gateway to see if the slow speed follows your computer or the port. Then I would install a LAN speed test app on both computers and do a local speed test.
Also how are you conducting the speed tests? Have you tried a different browser?

I would love to know what I'm missing.

Just the ookla speed test, same results on chrome and firefox. Roomate tested by same method. Will try swapping ports.

*up to 500mbps
I'd be more suspicious of this if my roommate wasn't pulling nearly 600mbps with basically the same setup.

It could a variety of things but it appears it's a well documented issue with that board. I didn't read it all but there is plenty of info out there. Google your board name as you typed it above followed by "slow internet".

A link would be fantastic b/c there seem to be endless threads about internet speeds, none of which are alike. I started a thread a while back about a powerline adapter but there's nothing useful there.

Do what all us old bastards did, buy an Intel NIC like this, just verify you have the slot to support it. $30.

Installed latest driver for intel ethernet controller i225-v. That did nothing.

We should keep circling the drain on an answer that hasn't been provided yet.
Replace the Mobo, or add a Gigbit NIC to ignore the problem for $30.
Or just wait to Gigabyte to fix it. This ain't complicated.

Remove the wifi adapter before you buy that NIC card, and try your speed test then. If it is still down then go buy the Walmart NIC.

Took the WiFi card out and swapped ports on the gateway. Neither worked. Pretty sure the controller on the Mobo is the problem. Ordered a NIC card similar to the one linked.
