I would go with an iPad. Android is great on phones but iOS IMO is much better for tablets. I have a 12.9" Pro and I love it.

i'm strongly considering that. i just got a fire HD8 for $80 to hold off for a bit and see what happens this year (possibly waiting for Prime Day deals). i decided that i'm going to buy a "top end" one and i'll give the fire to my mom if i find a better value down teh road on an ipad/SP4/NexusC (basically what i've targeted now)

Did you ever decide on which tablet you wanted? I ended up returning my Galaxy Tab S3 for the new iPad Pro, and I think it was the right decision. I love android (use a pixel phone), but like Phate said above, I think iOS is just a much better tablet OS.

My iPad Pro 10.5 gets delivered today. Upgrading from an OG iPad 2. Ready to have my mind blown

android for cheap tablets
ipad for people already in the ios environment
ipad for high end tablets
surface pro for laptop replacement

For doing any work, get a Surface Pro. Mobile operating systems aren't there yet for a lot of what I'll guess you want to do with it.
