Weird networking issues

Came home today to some pretty weird issues with my network. Quick summary:
-ATT fiber modem with Wi-Fi. I use modem Wi-Fi only for ring camera and Honeywell thermostat.
-Fiber modem to unmanaged switch in office. Cables routed from switch to wall jack in each room. Netgear nighthawk router in bedroom for Wi-Fi.
Here’s the issue. Got home and the thermostat lost connection. Reset all equipment, still have the issue. However, the Ring camera still works fine even though it’s on the same router Wi-Fi network. Also, I have 2 IoT arduino devices hooked up (hardwired to unmanaged switch), and those aren’t working either. My nighthawk router that’s plugged into the same switch has a signal, Wi-Fi works and my Xbox (plugged into nighthawk) works fine. To make it even weirder, certain websites won’t load for me either on phone Wi-Fi or my desktop computer plugged straight into the modem. 90% of websites work fine, but TD for instance just will not load. But if I take my phone off of Wi-Fi and use cell service, the websites pop right up. So it’s not that the websites are down.
This setup has been working seamlessly for over 2 years, and no settings have been changed. Any ideas why some devices are working, some aren’t, and some websites won’t get through? I’ve gone through all my settings and I’m about out of things to try.

Are you using AT&T's default DNS servers? If so, try switching to 8.8.8.8 or 1.1.1.1

I use the Blynk IoT app, so I can’t really access then locally (that I’m aware of) as all the data streams to their servers. I’ve been wanting to put it on a local server, just haven’t gotten to it yet.

Kind of what I was thinking too, but with this shitty ATT modem I’m locked into using, I can’t change the DNS. I’m stuck with ATT DNS

Well, to test, you can set the DNS server locally on your desktop to see if it can then access all sites. If it works, that would be yet another confirmation for me that AT&T is trash.
And in any case I would look into getting a better router.

I’ve loved it up until right now lol. Never had any outages in past 4 years. Been great.
But I did try setting desktop to google DNS. Still can’t get TD to load as a test.
Also, I’m stuck with ATT fiber modem too. They don’t let you use third party modems either.
Not sure changing out the Nighthawk router would do much though if that’s what you’re talking about. Its really just configured to give me Wi-Fi more than anything. It’s been 2 years since I set it all up so I can’t remember exactly how I configured it but it’s essentially just a switch for the hardwired Ethernet ports and an access point for Wi-Fi. I did look in to doing IP passthrough from the modem but never got too far with it since everything was working.

What is the IP addresses for the devices on the att network and what are they on your nighthawk network? Ie: 192.168.x.y Only need what the x is.

Everything gets assigned a 192.169.1.xxx address regardless of if it’s directly connected to modem/router or the switch or the nighthawk/Wi-Fi. The nighthawk is strictly configured as an access point.
I did have the 2 IOT devices set to static IPs because they kept dropping out in DHCP every now and then. But even with those removed from the equation I’m still having issues with the thermostat and website issues.
I’ve tried unplugging everything, having just office desktop directly hardwired to ATT modem/router, and have the same issues.

quote:Hm. I'm assuming you're using Windows? I really don't know if you have to reset the connection or whatever after changing DNS, but if you're sure it's using a different DNS then maybe try going here:

https://208.118.246.104/ <--- TD IP address, your browser will probably tell you it's not safe. It's ok to proceed to see if the site loads that way.
Maybe also try:
quote:and
nslookup tigerdroppings.com
quote:
tracert 208.118.246.104
in a command window and post the results.

This is what I was curious about to see if you had multiple DHCP servers running.
Sounds like the att router is the issue. Try to put it in passthrough and use your nighthawk as the router to test. When you do this you can also set the default DNS in your nighthawk to one listed above. All your devices connected will then use that DNS insteqd of what att uses.

quote:Oh yeah I forgot you had that router. If you want you can put the AT&T modem in bridge/passthrough mode and put the nighthawk back on router duty.

Yeah guess I will try this tomorrow. Will have to do some research. I’m pretty tech savvy (Electrical Engineer and a little programming experience), but networking and router configurations isn’t something I’ve ever dug into too deep. That and maybe I’ll try to convince ATT to swap my router out for a newer one I guess.
Preciate the help

No luck when I typed in the direct IP for tigerdroppings.

I think something is going on with AT&T. I’m having the same problem. Everything “works”, domains resolve, and working sites respond to ping. I’ve reset just about every device and changed settings. No luck. There are only certain sites that don’t work. Others are just fine and I’m getting my full gig bandwidth.
Hoping I will wake up in the morning and things will be working.

Having the exact same issue, on att fiber too. Basically every site will load except for TD

Damn. Well that makes me feel a little less crazy. Thanks for posting that.

Can you disable IPV6 on your main router? If not, try disabling it on the interface of a device having the issue.

I have had, and still have IPV6 disabled. I don’t remember why I disabled it in the first place 2 years back, but I think it was causing some issues somehow.
I just texted a buddy across the street and he is having similar issues too. Sounds like it’s on ATTs end so it’s just a waiting game now.
Thanks for all the help though.

I have ATT and had same issues. I called them last night and it was an ATT issue. This morning I still can’t access TD through wireless. It comes up on cellular but not wireless.
Edit: it’s working now.

Had the same issue with ATT fiber. Funny part is, if I turned on my VPN, everything worked fine.
