I’m in the process of building a gaming PC and I’m not quite sure what I want as far as a video card. This is what I’ve purchased so far...

- AMD Ryzen 5 2600 Processor with Wraith Stealth Cooler
- Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 DRAM 3200MHz C16 Desktop Memory Kit
- MSI Performance Gaming AMD X470 Ryzen 2 AM4 DDR4 Onboard Graphics CFX ATX Motherboard (X470 Gaming Plus)
- WD Blue 1TB SATA 6 Gb/s 7200 RPM 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch Desktop Hard Drive (WD10EZEX)
- EVGA 500 W1, 80+ WHITE 500W, 3 Year Warranty, Power Supply 100-W1-0500-KR, Black

I know video cards can get expensive depending upon what you want, but I don’t want to break the bank and at the same time, I don’t want to cheap out on one. Any recommendations?

Should be some good prices in the near future on GTX 1070/1080s as the RTXs start phasing in.

Or if you're willing to wait and spend the money, the Radeon VII is reported to beat out the RTXs in benchmarks and at a fraction of the cost.

What are you going for? 1080p? 1440? 4k?

What about frame rate?

I'd buy a used 1070 to slip in there.

I know you didn't ask about it but you're completely cheating yourself if you don't add a m.2 SSD (like 500g) to this system to hold the system files on. It's well worth the $150 or less to have a SSD holding the windows install.

If you don't need high frame rates, I would go for a RX580/590 or GTX 1060 (RTX 2060 is also an option here, but a little more expensive).

If you need high frame rates, I would go with a GTX 1070 or GTX 1080. If you really need freesync, you could go with a Vega 56/64.

Used 1070 for sure. Sub $250 everywhere and has some of the best performance per dollar

After that I'd look at rx 480/580s and gtx 1060s

I’m leaning toward an RX580. Amazon has a MSI RX580 on sale for 219, which I’m thinking about buying. I appreciate all of the advice from everyone.

RX580. Anything else is overkill.

Baw go to ebay and buy one from a reputable seller. They're like $125 or cheaper on there

For 1080p 60fps probably, not for 144hz though

if you don't buy an SSD, you might as well use a Pentium 4 and a Radeon 9800 Pro and get your half-life 2 on.

You will need more power to keep the system running smooth. I would go with a at least a 700W or 750W ($30 more than a 500W)

Add an SSD for your Operating system (~$75)

and just like others have said, GTX 1070 will be more than enough graphics. (till the next better card comes out)

Careful. My PC with my GTX 1080 pulls more than that when I have a game going

What CPU do you have?

Because my itx build with an 8400 and more power hungry 780ti doesn't even fully load my 450w PSU

If he gets a 1070 a 500w PSU is plenty
