Verizon: Can I not do a normal phone upgrade?

My update is here. I want to get an iphone 6, and go on my way.
What the hell is this Edge stuff? Pay per month and be able to upgrade whenever I want? Idgaf about upgrading, I'm going from a 4 to a 6 right now.
Dude says my plan will go up $30 whether I do the Edge plan or not. Wtf? Why would my plan go $30 per month right now just because of an update?

Upgrade after half the price of the phone is paid for in monthly installments, and you can't actually make any advance payments towards that amount. In other words, you can upgrade after a year. Not a good deal.

That's not all correct
Edge worked out for me and my wife's plan
Bill went up 8 dollars but we didn't have to pay 199 up front for each of the phones
Edge works best if you have the higher data plans, 10GB+

So the way Edge works is, you get a $15 or $25 discount on your plan for hopping onto Edge. Then what you are doing is paying the MSRP of the iPhone over 24 months. It's roughly a monthly charge of $27 (iPhone 6). So no your bill will not go up $30 because it's just about a wash once you factor in the discount. And once the payments are complete you get to keep the $15 or $25 discount saving you more money after the 2 years.
Also there isn't a $40 activation fee, and you save more money upfront by only paying sales tax on the MSRP, as opposed to paying 199+40.
Do the math.
At the present pricing 6gb+ or higher.
Also this is false. You can make a payment to upgrade.

What happens when your phone breaks or gets lost/stolen 6 months in? Then you're paying for a phone you don't have while looking for a new one.

They make you get insurance (about $11 a month). I'm about to get a new phone and I'm just going to pay full price and then pocket the discount ($25 for the line and $11 for no insurance). So in this case a $650 phone pays for itself in 18 months.

They didn't make me get insurance

Hmm then the Verizon guy lied to me.

I mean they could have changed it recently
I got 2 phones on edge in December with none

That is what insurance is for. You mitigate that risk when you accept insurance.
Also the insurance is highly recommended but not a full fledged requirement. The rep probably bundled the price in with the insurance.

A payment to satisfy 100% of the remaining balance on the entire retail price of the device.

Again you're wrong. No wonder why you said EDGE is a bad deal you're misinformed. You can definitely pay off 60% / 75% (which ever tier you were approved for) of the cost after 30 days of purchase (or wait 18 months) and trade the phone in to get an upgrade.
It's kind of obvious who I work for. And these statements can be easily verified by asking a knowledgeable sales rep.

Ok ok ok...let's start from the beginning. What plan are you currently on?

Just trying to debunk the misinformation people put out there, that's all.

A lot of people shite on edge....personally I like it. I started on it when I bought my first Windows phone. I used it for 6-7 months and just wanted to go back to android. I think I had to pay like 40-50 to even up the edge stuff and then I got the g3.
It is cool if you want to change phones every 6/7mos to a year.

They really have made phone plans unnecessarily complicated.

No, I feel they are just intentionally confusing and misleading. I once went in there to see if I could downgrade my data plan from 2gb to 1gb. Something that should have been straightforward made me want to pull my hair out. I could not get a straight answer from them. Sadly, in the end, they won and I kept my 2gb plan. Dickheads.
