I currently have three 27” monitors (2560x1440 @ 165Hz) for my home office setup. I want to replace these with a single 49” ultrawide monitor. I am concerned about losing picture quality because I will primarily be working with small text in spreadsheets, etc. and will not be using this for gaming at all.

I know it will be expensive so disregarding budget, what would your recommendation be for this monitor? I would also be ok with waiting if there are better options upcoming.

Why would you want to replace the 3 monitor setup?

I’m OCD about some things and I’m constantly fidgeting with the monitors, trying to get them lined up correctly. And then cats will move them again. Plus we have other uses in mind for the monitors elsewhere. Just an excuse to upgrade my work area and clear up desk space

I got the Alienware 38” AW3821DW and it’s fantastic… it’s not oled so no risk if burn in and good text clarity.

Samsung just released a 57” monster (2x32” equivalent). It’s 7680x2160p with a 240Hz refresh rate.

You’re only $2500 away from it

But there are a number of 5210x1440p in the 49” form factor. I have the Phillips version. The only way I’d update is if a 2160p version became more affordable or had a 3-computer KVM integrated into it (it switches between two easily with wired mouse/keyboard. I don’t use the network feature on it. I have a windows rig (i5-8500, PNY 1660Super) plugged into the DisplayPort, an m1 Mac Mini on the USB-C. It has two HDMI ports but no real way to share keyboard/mouse between them. It just has 3 USB ports on the monitor, but it likes USB hubs just fine. Sometimes sharing gets “stuck” when I switch inputs, so I’ll plug/unplug my USB-C on the Mac. I have an 8-port USB Anker hub and share mouse/keyboard/touchpad then a separate USB hub on the desktop if I want a device to only be on one device or the other.

I could, of course, do a USB switcher on the ‘upstream’ port, but then I’m toggling multiple buttons to get it right instead of just switching inputs, and the 3rd computer I currently have in there is running Proxmox, so it’s basically headless and run over a browser, but I did/do want to put a dedicated Linux test bench on there. Another alternative there would be a wireless mouse/keyboard that have a 3-way switch (like Logitech does on most of theirs), but I still hate batteries and multiple toggles to make things work, so I’m living with it.

Do you notice any issues with text clarity with the 49” 5210x1440p? I might jump on the 57” if it goes on sale for Black Friday

I think you're confused with how resolution works

Maybe so, just going off of complaints I’ve been reading about those 49” monitors

I'd stay with your 3 monitors. I switched from 2 to a huge ultrawide and it's worse for productivity.

If I had to guess, I think he's referring to larger pixel size for extremely large monitors below 4k. I wouldn't be terribly concerned at 1440p, but it's not an unreasonable concern.

Vs other 27” 1440p monitors, no.

Vs a 32” 2160p monitor, again, no. But if I were using large (many cells) spreadsheets, I would want 2160p.

I will probably own the Samsung one once I wear the wife down with talking about how cool it is.

They have a 55” that’s more TV dimensions that’s a fair bit cheaper, but I like 32:9>>>16:9

ETA: just to be crystal clear here: if you don’t stick with an ultra wide 49 + 1 of your current monitors, you’re losing 1/3 of your workspace. I am unclear whether you realize that- you very well may. If you’re a one up high, two across guy it may work, but most the 49 are curved and may sort of screw up the aesthetic if you’re leaving one up high. And, of course, be sure they’re VESA compatible. I never bothered to look on mine or at this feature (I have a nook it sits in. No way to go wider or higher, so no real point in a different stand).

Yeah I will definitely be losing some workspace, but I’ll be adding my Macbook to the workspace with the extra desk space I’ll have. I just didn’t want to mess with mounting three monitors, so that’s the biggest reason for going to just a single mounted monitor. I was going to pull the trigger on a Samsung Odyssey 49” (Neo G9), but saw tons of complaints about blurry text when doing work instead of gaming

Assuming you have a modern MacBook (anything in the silicon range), you picked the worst of the 49” for the purpose. You’ll need an additional dock and multiple connectors.

The Phillips and LG offerings (and probably others, but I’m a little lazy right now as I’m soldering my c9 pixels to go up on my house while a few beers deep) have a single-connector USB-c with power delivery + video.

IE- you have keyboard, mouse, (and whatever) on the desk. They’re connected to the monitor and look somewhat “neat.”
You leave a USB-c hanging/loose. Walk up with MacBook, plug in, and voila! Everything is connected (and there are quite a few windows laptops that have USB-C docking as well. XPS and Surface at a minimum are capable of receiving power over their USB-C and being used in this manner).

Again, is it a big deal to buy a little adapter to do this? No. It’s not. But if you’re spending $800-1200 (side note. I actually found my Philips on sale for like $750, dropped it when installing it, and was able to exchange it for like $300), I’d get the one that fits the use case.

Other plus for Phillips, especially if using a MacBook- it’s got an integrated camera and mic that are very passable. We FaceTime the grands from ours quite often, and the little ones have no problem fighting for screen space. May not fit the use case, and another $100 solves it with 30+ options, but was super useful for me.

Just since I’m mentioning options and you’re mentioning more or less docking a laptop- you can pass an Ethernet connection through the Phillips (only one I know of with Ethernet on board, but that’s hardly a plus in today’s day and age. But it may be something useful in your scenario), but mine acted funny when the wifi on my Mac mini wasn’t shut off (it got turned on for some weird feature I was using at one point, so I had wifi there + backfeeding Ethernet over USB and then Ethernet directly into its rj45 port. May not be a big deal with a MacBook that’s being docked, but I had some unexpected behavior on the desktop with it).

The cable management on most of them isn’t great, but I like the stand on mine. Cables are visible but easily velcroed to the metal legs. The LG stand is my 2nd favorite.

The Samsung ones have better refresh rates, but I’m not a gamer, so KVM + Camera, mic (though I use condenser mics through a Presonus audio station 99% of the time) won me over.

I have the 49” Samsung Oddysey monitor and love it. Spreadsheet, word doc and email side by side by side and I can blow blueprints up so it’s easy on my old eyes.

I did this with the Dell 49". I prefer the look and feel of the new monitor. However, there is one drawback for me... I didn't realize until after the swap that my middle monitor was used so much more than the other two. It seems obvious, but I used all three, all the time. So now that I have the 49", it is divided into two spaces as if it is 2 - 27" monitors. I don't have that 'middle' monitor that I would pull whatever I was most focused on at the moment. Either way, I won't go back. I'm learning to treat my 'left side' as the primary.

He seems to be using OSX. It does not come with a native window management tool like windows. But Rectangle is either free or under $5 (I think free) and has hot keys to split into several different partitions. Middle third would not be equivalent to his current setup, but it wouldn’t be bad and formats very well with everything I’ve ever worked with. I think you can configure a middle half and then 1/4 on either side.

But the most important thing:
Learn the hot keys. Being four keyboard clicks away from moving from quarters to halves to the most important thing in the middle makes that monitor enjoyable. Having to click the tray icon and manually move stuff around makes it a chore.

As Doc alluded to, for anyone on Windows 11, all you have to do is hover over the "maximize" icon in the top right of the window to bring up these options:

I will be using both Mac OSX and Windows. Would it be possible for most monitors to display both operating systems, or would that be a feature only a few monitors have?

Most have Picture in Picture/Picture By Picture, but make sure you read the features list. Some have software that will let you use one mouse/keyboard for both (I don’t use this).

Ended up ordering the 57” Odyssey from Best Buy with plans to just test it out and return before the time limit (unless it goes on sale and I can price match). While waiting for that to come in, I was going to grab any other connections I might need to hook up the Mac and PC at same time. Would I just need a USB-C to DP adapter for that? The monitor is 240Hz but I’m used to 165 and it works fine for me

Edit to add: Reddit reviews make it seem like these things die after a few weeks, so if that’s my experience then that will help me make the decision to avoid this one
