One argument for going with a newer product than the USG, say maybe a UDM, is longevity.
yea but isnt the dream machine just a combined unit for multiple things? that usually isnt as good as individual devices for a specific purpose.

USG is an old product and the UXG line is coming soon, but really the USG should be fine.

Does that mean the price of USGs and USG4-Pros will go down?

I just bought a USG, getting delivered today. I wonder if I should return it...

Does anyone know when the UXG is being released? I can only find information about the UXG-pro, but not any info about a release date.

I was debating between unifi or pfsense (on a protectli). I decided to go with Unifi because I found a walkthrough for setting up a smart home VLAN with the unifi controller (which is an add-on on home assistant). The UDM-Pro just seems like way more than anything I would ever need, and I don't want wifi on the router.

ETA: My subconcious is now making the decision to return the USG and get a rack plus UDM-Pro plus a UPS, and might as well get some cameras since the UDM-Pro has the NVR. Son of a bitch.

Following, I'm doing similar. Building a 2600sf ranch on basement. Also detached garage. Figuring 2-3 api's for wireless. One in detached. Wired for TVs and api's. I was thinking just a 16 port switch. I also plan to use cameras, wired for 8 total outside house.

Was going to run to all one switch in media cabinet. Bad idea?

I don't think so, just make sure you get good cooling but I'm not a network expert. I just read alot.

I'm also going to be on ATT Fiber. So do you need the USG and the Dream? IF you have more than 8 ports needed, you just get the USG and a switch? I assume you have to use the ATT Router in bridge mode.

Seems to me you would need the gateway, a switch and then out to devices.

They put new products to "Early Access" and availability will be very sparse especially for something like that. People have been waiting years for a USG update. The announcement was back in Feb and it's still not in EA. Though that might be due to corona.

Some products never leave Early Access and it could be months to a year before it does. Also, new products tend to be buggy so even if it was available I'd wait till it stabilized.

I'm gonna stick with my USG and wait for the UXG line as I prefer separate components.

Fyi, Ubiquiti put to early access a few weeks ago their first video doorbell. That thing sold out in minutes. Whenever it becomes available, it's gone in minutes. People setup alerts in the Ubiquiti discord and get notified when new stock is available.

Would there be any reason to create a vlan at home? Was wondering if I should create one for security cameras separately, but not sure it's really necessary.

Yes. You want to put all your IoT devices on a separate VLAN from your main network. The only thing on your main network should be network gear, PCs, tablets, phones that are regularly updated with security patches etc. You can even put the network gear on it's own VLAN.

That way if those IoT devices are hacked (or spying) they can't access your stuff.

Cameras are a little different depending on if they need internet access etc. If they don't need internet, then you could put them in a VLAN with no internet access or use firewall rules.

I've got 3 networks/vlans in my setup: Primary, IoT, Guest

Once I add cameras, I might create another for those but not sure yet. If I use Ubiquiti cameras then I might just leave them in primary. If I go with another vendor, then I'll put them in another VLAN.

Forgot to mention. Even if you create VLANs, you need to create firewall rules to block the traffic if using UniFi. By default, UniFi allows inter-vlan traffic which is dumb imo.

There are two good Youtube videos on this:

Do a rack. And run conduit at every possibly drop location to future proof it with that spray foam.
