Why isn’t there a tiger droppings phone app?

Because it wouldn’t accomplish anything that isn’t accomplished by the mobile website.

So there shouldn’t be really any apps made for any website, correct?

Actually apps are usually more user-friendly. And the web is still available for those that don’t want the app.

Creating an app costs money. Both up front and long term for maintenance.

What is your justification for the cost? Besides the dubious claim that it would be more "user-friendly."

Complex sites like financial, travel, etc, are well served by having the UI simplified to the extreme in an app. TD is already an extremely simple site that scales down quite well to a mobile web page. I can't think of anything the user experience would gain with a stand alone app.

So it’s doubtful that it’s more user-friendly? Why do we have apps at all then for things like banking and navigation you can just go to the web and do it. Facebook, Reddit Instagram all those apps need to go away I guess?

Apps can harvest data from a mobile device in ways a website cannot. That's why they exist.

Interesting. Finally, a logical response. Thank you.

Because banking and navigation apps actually do things additional things beyond what the website does, things that require the execution of code. The web experience is not as featureful as the app.

I asked you to name something you'd like the TD app to do that the website cannot. You didn't provide any examples.

Yes, that's correct. The apps are there to make the services more monetizable. That's why the Reddit app constantly tries to lock you out of seeing content on the web and tries to force you to install the app.

I did not see where you asked me that probably because I’m looking on a cell phone on a site that’s designed to be on a computer, so the layout is not as good as if it was an app. I’m not sure what you mean on the banking stuff because I do every bit of my banking and financial stuff on my cell phone never on a computer and I never have issues with the apps not being able to do something. One thing I like on the apps like with Reddit it alerts me when someone comments on a post or whatever directly to my phone and not through my email. It appears that I’ve hit a nerve with people with this question so I think I got my answer. Thanks for all the help.

TigerDroppings automatically detects if you're on a mobile phone and presents you with a mobile layout. You don't need spend money on an app to give users a mobile view.

TigerDroppings Mobile View on iPhone

TigerDroppings Desktop View on iPhone

If you're seeing the standard desktop computer layout on your phone, something is wrong with your mobile browser configuration and you should probably fix that.

Also, “my posts” is a link available near the bottom of every page after you sign in. Click it, and then look at the “replies” button. There you will be able to see if someone has replied to your post. I much prefer this over push notifications.

One other thing….

Appstores can’t lock you out and thus control your business if you’re web-only.

Glorious untouchable web is the way to go.

This is the right answer here.

On top of that save the webpage to your home screen on your phone and its essentially an app. I mean if they made an app for it it would literally be no different than doing that.

Terribly incorrect. Why do you think almost every damn website and company now has an app? It's because apps provide a shitload more user data that can be sold or be used to customize ads and bring in considerably more revenue.

You think all these companies are spending money on apps that have merely the same utility as a mobile website?

For everyone else, any browser you use on an iPhone is forced by Apple to use their WebKit, which limits tracking, which is why companies are so desperate to get you on their apps, because they can bypass those controls.

He didn't make that argument.
