That is a real problem. Especially if you are using the monitor for multiple computers. You know it is being used for computer A, but computer B still think it is there and lets you slide the cursor over to that space

Back in the day when I had all the compiz 3d cube bling going on you could also config it to do a ripple emanating from the location of the mouse when you hit ctrl by itself to help you find it. And, you know, look cool.

This is one thing MacOS nailed and I don't know why it's not baked into Windows... Shake your mouse around (or swipe around the track pad) and the cursor becomes large so you can't miss it. When you stop shaking the mouse it goes back to normal size.

KDE has pretty much all the effects compiz had, including one to find the mouse. I don't think it will ripple around it, but it puts rings around it to help you find it.
These days I prefer a simpler desktop (MUCH simpler, search google images for i3wm
