My kids are starting grow up and our house is becoming a busy place. It is time that we have a phone dedicated to the house if for nothing else emergency calls that the kids can use easily w/out an adult's help.

So far i'm considering these:

1) Google voice with an add on 911 package for $10/yr. OBi makes a device ($64) I can plug into my network and then plugin any regular old phone. It would be exactly like having a landline.

2) Use an old cell phone with bluetooth. Get a pre-paid SIM and then connect to a traditional cordless phone via the bluetooth connection. Any SIM suggestions for this?

Any other suggestions?

Do you have a cable or internet subscription? Those companies will gladly do package deals, and it's a chance to lower your bill

OBi one port

They have several other devices with more features. this is the most basic one from what I gather.

Can you call 911 with a Google Home Hub or one of the other Smart Home devices?

You have to have a plan for location to work properly.

In some states telephone carriers are required to provide 911 capability to phones even if the account has been cut off. If your house is already wired plug a phone in and test it, that my be all your need to do.

I use Ooma and it works fine. Very reliable and cheap.

Was about to recommend ooma too. Have been using it since 2010 and it works great. Costs around $3 a month due to taxes...

Ooma looks great but it will about $5.50/month in taxes and fees to use Ooma. I'd like to keep it a bit lower than that.

It is a great option though. I can't rule it out.
