I went with the HSU it’s big but it seems to be really flexible with the tuning which I like and should fill my space when I want to crank it or watch a movie or music.

Let us know how you like it. I have never owned an HSU sub before. Hear really good things.

I’m excited now I have to wait for it. They are a only processing orders on Mon and Thurs due to covid. Hopefully I’ll still get it by next Mon or Tuesday.

That’s a neat sub I didn’t even see that in my search. It’s a little more $ than what I spent it reminds me of those def tech super cubes

Interesting, its a 15" and on sale for a hair more with shipping than the Monolith. It would probably make more sense to get the 15" due to the size of the room.

If you can get the Hsu 15" driver for about the same as a monoprice 12", that's absolutely the right play.

It was $65 more. I don't know if I really need the extra "oomph" that it provides but it will be nice when I get to use it. It was a small amount to pay to get a better quality sub.

Now I just have to wait till next Wednesday for it

But itll be worth it

frick yes it will be worth it. A sub that has plenty left in the tank no matter what you ask it to do is great...and you get more definition, tighter cleaner bass, and perhaps something a bit more attractive to look at. If I ever get a standalone house I will likely upgrade my sub as well.

Just wait till it opens a door for you.

(I have this one door that has always worked fine but you could tell the lockset just barely catches. ...)

. . . One of my setup pieces was the The Hurt Locker, that bomb scene which takes out the first tech, it's a deep down in the body, metal crunching, and pebbles falling all around scene. Twice now at a good volume that door opened on it's own at the same point (had to fix it). My old sub never did that.

The first time you have a great sub and it pressurizes the room you're going, frick, I was missing this the whole time?!

Hurt locker is a great movie to test out a new sub.

It’s going to be a long few days. I was jamming out to music today and the sub I have literally died after one song. Wife was even enjoying it for a sec. glad I have a replacement coming. She understood investing in it after I told her I had this one for 15yrs. It sounded really good in my old house but my new place the rooms are too big and it sounds lost-well dead now

If you are playing music through the sub....PLEASE do this...

Get a calibration mic MiniDSP UMIK-1 for $75, download REW (Room EQ Wizard)
free software, and get that sub dialed in perfectly.

I would bet my audio rig that 95% of every subwoofer in the world is so improperly set up that it actually causes sound to deteriorate (most don’t realize how bad it is because they are enthralled by the “deep thumping and earth moving” bass.).

If you just nail down “phase” at first (ignoring for right now output level, timing, crossover frequency, slope), and then do a before/after, or, sub in-phase/sub out of-phase comparison, you will be amazed at just how big a difference it makes. It will dictate whether your low end is snappy and quick, with authority and control with a fast punch, versus a low end that is slow, muddy, lethargic, and just...meh.

Then realize that timing (aligning the wave from the sub to the wave of the mains) is also another big step in getting it better.

Spend some time reading/learning about sub set-up and using free software to your advantage...it can make the difference between “this sub is pretty good” and “holy shite, I’m ordering a second one today!”

...and two subs isn’t twice one—it’s exponentially better, and not volume or boom factor, but becoming seamless between the sub and mains.

Do it.

Senor Marcos; Very good explanation. Will copy for future reference. Oh yeah, got the Yamaha AS 1100 amp. Good time to get it during the “quarantine”. Big jump from a broken one channel pioneer. Yamaha fills the whole house without effort. Big fun.

Thanks you for the help! I’ll get the mic next week after my wife chills out I’ve been spending a lot of money in quarantine lol

I usually spend a lot of time trying to setup the sub to blend in with the mains speakers I will get this setup I’ve never been this most serious with it but I have two setups to “setup”

Monolith is the only one on the list worth considering if you are doing movies and music.

Other ones to look at in the same ballpark:

Rythmik L12F, LVX12 or FVX12
SVS PB-2000 pro
HSU VTF2, VTF3

EDIT: Congrats on the HSU VTF3. Now you just need to get a 2nd one.

Just got it hooked up. Will need some more tuning but I think I got it closer now that I’ve messed with it for a bit.

Music sounds really good - movies are ridiculous. It’s just so clean I can’t really describe it I feel like I have been listening to shitty bass my whole life.

Already got the HSU I was trying to keep it under $800 the wife still had to take some convincing over that. Got it for about $865 if I remember right.
