Hey guys. My dad just purchased a brand new 75 inch TV and we hooked it all up this weekend. He’s upgrading his DIRECTV box to 4K this week.

We messed with it and watch Netflix and other things in “4K” but it just look like normal HD. The TV could just need some configurations but I noticed that he’s using an ONKYO 609 that’s about 6-7 years old.

The only thing I could find online said it has 4K pass-through ability.

If then hit me, Everything runs through the Onkyo and then the output HDMI runs directly to the new Sony 4K TV.

Does that mean he needs a new 4K receiver? I just feel like my three-year-old 4K TV looks much sharper. He’s paying for 4K on Netflix but whenever we went to 4K content it’s still only said HD on Netflix.

Yep.

I just looked that receiver up.

The Onkyo 609 will not properly pass 4K through

If he does not want to buy a new receiver, he could always run his components directly to the TV via HDMI and just run an optical audio cable to get pass through audio on the onkyo

TBH- I’m surprised the 609’s HDMI pass through is even working anymore . Those models around that time were notoriously for the HDMI boards going out prematurely

I’m actually in the market for a new receiver right now for my outdoor setup. My old Onkyo 515 just bit the dust. From what I’m seeing , the pickings are very slim right now on the receiver front. I’m guessing it’s covid supply chain related. For that reason, I would tend to wait if he can and try going the optical route

Actually the switches are starting to go out

He only has 5.1 so I’m wondering if he could get by with this one? Will this give him 4k?

I had one. I remember a rumor going around at the time of a cargo ship having humidity issues and the units going out because of that.

cant he run the native apps on his TV and push the audio out to his AVR through HDMI?

this might get him by until he can get a new AVR if he wants to view the best looking content.
