any linux/plex server users on here who rebuilt their Windows hardware to run linux?
i'm considering it; it will big a PITA b/c my plex setup is massive but if it will improve/extend the life of that server i'm willing to tackle it.

You guys know you can simply disable the check for things like TPM, CPU, etc so that Win11 can be installed?
Only if the CPU supports SSE4.2+. If not, win11 24h2 will not work at all due to the kernel now requiring SSE4.2.

I changed my plex server from win11 to KDE Neon. It was pretty simple but I keep all my media on NAS. So there was no need to transfer anything.

this isn't my first rodeo either and in my younger days w/ free time i didn't mind jumping through 100 hoops to keep my cracked version of spotify running, my pirated OS, pirated xbox games, YT vanced....
no, i'm not doing that anymore. i dont have the time to fool w/ something like that which could stop working at any time and frick up my shite.
going through the front door (or switching to another OS) is the only way i would consider upgrading.

i have 4 16TB external WD drives w/ my library attached to my PC. i'm guessing the pathing wouldn't carry over and i'd have to manually relink all of my media.

The biggest issue is I'm guessing your external drives are formatted in NTFS. While you "can" use that with linux, it would be highly advisable to use something more stable like EXT4.
But yes, linux does not use pathing like D:\media\movies. Linux starts at root which is "\" everything is based off that and you could mount your shared media pretty much anyway you want to. You could end up with \mnt\plex\media or you could end up at \home\CAD703X\Plex\media (this is easier due to permissions).
Linux will do practically anything which also makes it a bit confusing. The hardest part with a Plex server is deciding whether you want to run it as its own Plex user which is more secure but then can be a PITA when it comes to library management. Or, you can run Plex as yourself (your user) and then permissions are pretty much transparent to you making life easier. If you run Plex under your user then it would probably be best to mount your Plex media in your user home directory.

yep, i set up retropie on a raspberry pi and you better be happy/familiar with command line and text file editing.
i'm not sure i want to go through that again. it took me a solid YEAR before i truly understood how all of that crap worked together. very powerful..but just a massive PITA that i had to google 100 different sites to find, say, the ID number needed for my particular Dell monitor.

I don't know if this is helpful but this a demo of using Ubuntu with a minimal desktop to run Plex...

I wish I would have seen this before starting
I'm still having a hard time getting HomeAssistant to work right. I can get it running but haven't been able to connect to anything yet. Smart devices on network, zwave controller via usb, and can't connect using the HA iOS app.

I use whatever is lying around. Getting into AI stuff caused a few hiccups and migrations. I have jellyfin running in LXC on old nuc8i5beh along with HA, node red, and 20 other small services. Love it. Llama.cpp on Jetson AGX. Frigate on a 1220p laptop, soon to be 155H board. Everything Intel makes is effortless across Debian based systems, especially for media.
Only issue was repurposing that cheapo 1220p laptop required a bios update for NVMe.
If you mean desktop Linux, I just have an old SATA w/ $2 Ali express usb3 adapter I use to dual boot Ubuntu 20.04 for Nvidia SDK manager. Bummer have to use bitlocker key every time I switch back but not end of world.
I’m all about preventing e-waste and fixing up stuff that is worthy of it. My 1235u latitude was pieced together for $100. That said, anything older than 8th gen needs tossed and big desktops and servers don’t belong in the home.

and you're wrong. my closet is loaded with servers, hubs, switches, battery backups, etc.
pizza-box profile is the best way to organize and have consistency.
eta not you, ace. responding to dallaswho.

I had a Xeon workstation for analytics. Then my laptop was good enough for that so moved the big machine to a back room, ran some services and eventually got a couple GPUs. This is recently. Once utilized, it didn’t take six weeks to realize how big of mistake that was. We had basically lost a guest room.
Services are back on a NUC and a spare laptop. AI is on a Jetson.
I don’t know how gamers do their thing. Do they have really big rooms and fans or do they sweat their butts off for hours?

I converted the closet in the laundry room to my server space. Cut a big arse hole in the wall to support all the cable I pulled and ended up installing a big arse access panel.
24 Port 10gbit managed switch which is loud as hell. I hear good things about swapping to ceramic fans but I don't spend time in the laundry room so I don't care.
I also have the printer in there as well. It's nice to have everything in one place.
ETA I also had AT&T pull fiber into that closet so that's also in there and on the UPS so whenever there's a power outage my Plex server and broadband is unaffected unless it lasts longer than 30 minutes.

So far I am ultra glad that I put Linux on my rig and ditched Windows.
I don't do anything intensive with it, just store stuff, simple word processing stuff, and shitpost on TD. So far, it's dramatically faster than it used to be and so far 100% reliable.
I kinda hate myself for not doing this a long time ago.

I switched to Linux 19 years ago and I thank my younger self every day for that.
