Speaker cables can be a point of contention, but what about Ethernet cables? I need one...

Can I just order a Cat6 or 6a off of amazon and be fine for 4K content? Like maybe an amazon recommended one? I’m not sure if one brand is better than another, I just need like a 12-15ft cable.

Yes, any ethernet cable is likely OK. TBH

Amazon, randomly selected. $5.99

Or go to Walmart (or Best Buy, or Office Depot or Staples, etc.). $5.97 @ Walmart

The cat cable only really impacts what connection speed your ethernet ports can negotiate. For most home applications, 1Gbps is max network port speed you'll come across. For reasonably short runs, Category 5e cable is all you'll need to be able to negotiate a 1Gbps connection on both ends of the line.

Cat6+ becomes more preferable when you get into longer runs or PoE applications.

What are you doing here?
Extending HDMI over ethernet?
just talking about streaming and needing to maximize your bandwidth?
Dumb question, but are all your sources 4K?

Go to Amazon, get anything with 100+ reviews that's 4+ stars. I'd imagine there are hundreds that fit the mold..

Will be shortly... I’m getting the 4K box from direct. Have the latest Apple TV. Did a speed test and my signal is 51 and 16 I think. Picked up a 900f and I’m trying to get things lined up to enjoy the tv as best as I can. I was going to use the cable to connect the Apple TV directly to the internet.

For a 10-15ft pre-terminated rj45 cable, essentially anything will do.

Like someone before said- flat or thin ones are good from an aesthetics/cable management standpoint. Monoprice makes a slimrun cable. It's a little more expensive, but they work well. I use the 6" variety in my patch panel. I even have a couple of them carrying PoE without a problem.

But over the distance you're talking, all you need is cat5e, which is generally thinner than cat6 or 6a anyway.

Check this:

What you claim to want is 51mbps. Your distance is far, far less than 330 feet. Anything that is cat5 or greater can do this. A higher "category" doesn't really help anything in your case. Buy the cheap one that isn't rated horribly (because you could have a poorly-made cable with a loose jack or something like that, but that's about the only real 'quality' you are looking at).

Otherwise, get the color/style you'd like.

One more question.... does it matter that it will be ran in the wall?

how will it be run in a wall?

Normally, you wouldn't want to buy a pre-terminated cable for such an application. You would want to buy non-terminated cable from a roll/bulk because you'll want to terminate it properly in a key/faceplate (an ethernet outlet in the wall like a phone jack).

Also, depending on how you run it within a wall, you'll want to keep it at least 1" deep in the wall cavity OR protect it somehow from potential penetrations from nails or screws. This can be done in multiple ways.

If it all possible, since this is going inside a wall, get the highest category you can so that you are more futureproof and the cost difference should be very little. I would also recommend utilizing conduit if at all possible so that you can either remove and replace the cable at a later date or pull more cables at a later date if needed w/out tearing up your finished wall.

i bought these to run through my walls. They have benefits, but can be very stiff and hard to work with.

Speaking of, i ran cat6 across most of my house a few months to my living room TV. Took about 4-5 hours. Lightening storm came 3 days later and fried it.

This can definitely happen. Shielded cable properly grounded on one end can help prevent this.
