But if I don’t connect wi-fi and go dumb tv route, it should be fine otherwise? Looking at one for $600 at Best Buy for a second room.
I dont think anyone makes a dumb TV anymore. You can buy any TV, even smart TV and choose not to connect it to the internet. Likewise, you dont have to use the TV's smart platform. They will all work with external devices or standard OTA tv signals. You only have to deal with the smart TV platform if you want to.

I paid 10k for a 79 inch Bravia about 7 years ago
What makes this TV worth 10K when compared to a 75” Hisense for $1500 or you just want to say you paid 10K for a TV

After doing a good deal of research, and diving back into all the latest & greatest in the tv world, I did just order the x90cl from Costco for my parents. The more I researched, the more it became apparent the x90 was the way to go for them.
It’s unfortunate the Sony’s mini-led model, x93l, is priced where it is ($1599 for 65”), because I think the concerns I have with the x90l would be fixed by that model, but not for $600 more than the x90l. Plus it’s actually missing a couple of things the x90l has. Had they placed that model around $1299-1399, it would be really tempting to go for it to get the mini-led tech, but as it stands now you might as well just get their oled model for $100 more, or an lg c3 for the same price.

TV arrived yesterday, and I was able to set everything up for my parents. When I have more time I’ll dig into some recommended settings from sources online. I think Classy Tech Calibrations (YouTube) was the one I kept seeing mentioned in forums for recommended settings on the x90k, and most seem to think that they’ll carry over to the x90l.
So far I just set it to custom, and turned off the usual power savings mode, and a couple of other little things, but I have to say, straight out of the box I’m pretty impressed with the picture quality. The black levels were probably my biggest concern, and while you can still see some bleeding into the letterbox, you have to look for it, and it’s really not that bad, and miles better than their previous Samsung. Also, I didn’t really notice any blooming on subtitles. This tv can get crazy bright. It may just be that I’m used to my 2017 lg oled, but this thing can melt your face, and I don’t even think it’s considered to be one of the super bright led TV’s.
Also, Sony Bravia core with purestream is an awesome idea, I hope that’s the direction other streaming sites will move in the future, but I won’t hold my breath. Sony doesn’t really promote it either. almost seems like an afterthought for them. First time I heard about it was doing research on this tv.

It is a great TV. Still loving my 85" X90CL. Any improvements to be had over it just aren't worth the $ for my usage.
I do wish it had more HDMI ports but nothing I can't work around.
EDIT: and yes you are right about brightness. For sustained brightness measurements, this TV is up there with the best and sony's require the least amount of calibration. They are almost completely spot on out of hte box.

Did you use a specific source to dial in picture settings? Rtings? I’m hoping to dive into that this weekend, and make all of the tweaks then…even though my parents aren’t likely to notice them.

Not really. Here are what I settled on:
SDR:
Custom Preset mode
- Brightness 10
- Color Expert 1
- Reality Creation Auto
- Local Dimming high
- Peak luminance high
- smoothness 1
- Clarity off
- Cinemotion high
- Gradiation low
I think anything else is set to off/disabled
HDR10
Custom Mode
- Enable Tone Mapping gradient preferred
Everything else similar
Dolby Vision
Dolby Vision Dark mode
- Color expert2

Currently great deals on their older A95K models at Best Buy. Snagged a 55 inch for the bedroom @ $1,699.

I have a 40" Sony Bravia I bought from circuit city before I ever heard of tigerdroppings and it's still going strong.
If they still have that kind of build quality couldn't recommend them more
