On sale for $4K...Do you really need a 85 inch TV? 75 inch can be had for significantly cheaper (thousands).

My suggestion is to go cheaper on the TV and more expensive on a streaming box. In 3yrs you can update the box, but who wants to drop another 4K on a TV?

Get as big as you want with great resolution and refresh rate, but cheap on everything else.

How expensive is a quality streaming box? $100 for the Roku ultra? Thats not that significant when comparing to an 85" tv

95% of tvs will have the same resolution (4k). Refresh rate is overrated unless your a hardcore gamer. Most quality TV's will all have 120hz anyway. Contrast ratio, local dimming performance, wide color gamut and HDR support are all more important

It's an AndroidTV. You don't need a streaming box.

At that price and size you may as well jump to a projector.

The larger it gets the less useable SD material becomes. There’s only so much upscaling can accomplish.

You missed the entire point of my post. In 3yrs, your TVs platform will be antiquated. It is wiser to get a cheaper TV and the latest and greatest streaming box. You can get a comparable screen size and resolution for 2k cheaper. Spend 200 on a streaming box and update the box every 2-3yrs.

With HDR10? HDR10+ With Dolby Vision? With local dimming? All of those are more important than resolution IMO.

I guess I still am.
Do you know what an AndroidTV is? It won’t get outdated unless apps stop updating themselves through google play, which is highly unlikely. I’ve had mine for about 7 years. I like it a lot more than my fireTV, and slightly better than my TCLRoku TV. I prefer the roku platform, but the Sony tv is obviously a better quality than the TCL tv.

Yes, I know what it is. As tech progresses, it becomes more resource heavy. That’s why all
Boxes are not created the same, and the platform on a TV runs like shite, even that Sony, which I’ve played with.

Spend the cash, do as you like, but in 2-3yrs your processing will be aggravating AF.

Edit: of course you like it better than a firestick/TV. Their processors suck.

Your argument doesn't make any sense. If he can afford a $4000 TV, he can afford $100 or more for the best streaming device. And he can afford to replace that streaming device with the "latest technology" every year.

Saying save $2000 on our TV so you can afford to spend an extra $50-$100 on the best streaming device makes no sense as an argument.

That's like saying save $10,000 on a car so you can afford the best tires for it.

You are also essentially saying the resolution is all that matters in the display and that is simply not true.

Exactly. And I dont know why he doesn't think the type of panel the "cheaper" tv has wont make a difference... You need a tv with the ability to run all the bells and whistles of said streaming player (HDR10+, Dolby Vision, etc.)

Theyre all gonna have the same 4k resolution (outside of a couple with 8k now). Resolution is one of the last things you should be worried about

That’s not what I’m saying. I’m saying he can get the same refresh rate, resolution, etc for a fraction of the cost. That Sony is a great TV but you can find one comparable for 2k cheaper and get a streaming box for 200 that will outperform it’s smart features.

If the guy wants to spend 4K on a product instead of 2200 on something that will perform as good, if not better, with the ability to upgrade as new tech is pushed, so be it.
