We have “cut the cord” and use a smart TV and an Apple TV for nextflix, sling etc. We also have a digital antenna for local channels but recently discovered we have some IPTV channels (newsmax, CNN, Bloomberg TV, etc). How did this happen?

You don't accidently have IPTV. You pay for it (~$10/mo) and have to install an app to use the service.

How/where did you "discover" these channels? My guess is within the sling app, because I believe sling has all the channels you mentioned. Or maybe AppleTV presents these channels in a different way because you have them with sling. I don't know anything about AppleTV, but I do know that no one is sending you those channels without payment.
IPTV is basically the same as sling/youtubetv/etc in the sense that local and cable channels are delivered to you over the internet. The biggest difference is IPTV services operate in a sort of legal grey area.

The term Iptv is internet protocol TV so it's a technical term for streaming TV. So any channel that comes across the internet can be called iptv. I assume what you have are free channels. A second use of the term Iptv is the bootleg cable you can pay a small amount for and get all the US, UK and other countries cable channels.

Would make sense. We logged onto Sling on the smart tv a couple of weeks ago. They are coming up when I “change the channel”. The channels are numbered something like IP-123

I have a question, I assume using IPTV doesn't give you any access to the ESPN app.
There are so many baseball games on sec network plus, and I use the ESPN app to watch those. Does the IPTV stuff carry those, or does it only show the actual sec network channel?

No you're not going to get access to ESPN because you have an IPTV subscription if we are talking about what is colloquial ly referred to as IPTV. At least not from the services I've used. You get every channel tho so good chance you won't need the ESPN app.
