Im not sure how that would work with the door having to swing open? Run a wire through the hinge?

I'm saying when you lock the dead bolt, have the end of the plunger deal come in contact with either wireless charging or metal contacts. I like the idea of smart dead bolts, but not enough to have to change batteries all the time.

I groked to see if there was one. Looks like somebody had the same idea in June of 2024.

I thought of something similar a while back, but then I thought the better and cleaner option would be flush mount wireless charging in the door and frame.

Edit: I see they also have a wireless version at the link.

It SWALLOWS batteries. I replace the 4 batteries about every 1.5 months.

Unfortunately, this. I had August for a few years and frick them forever. Pieces of shite. Got Yale and it works well for the most part but I have to change batteries way too often. Now that I've had it about a year+ I'm also seeing issues with BT and WiFi connectivity. I'm going to look into other options as we travel for months at a time.

I read there might be a zwave version of the Yale that uses much less battery. Would need a hub though.

I have used Kwikset smart deadbolts on two primary entry doors for a decade. Using lithium AAs, I had to replace them about every 6-7 months. It's not bad at all.

same with eufy. its so infrequent that i'm usually surprised when one is low.

i have 4 and the best thing you can do w/ a smart-bolt to extend battery life:

- dremel out the lockplate so there's ZERO friction if you want the batteries to last a long time when you install it. you want it to be like butter.

- dont have them automatically lock after opening except after 7pm or so when people aren't going in and out as much.

for the eufy, its super easy; i say 'auto lock after 3 minutes'...'only after 7pm' and it works like a champ.

I did the same. Not only do you want it to be less stress on the batteries, but you want to be sure the auto-lock will actually work and not get stuck, or else the feature is useless.

Yeah, I only set them to auto-lock after 10pm, but I only did that because the auto-lock would keep locking me out when I would walk the dogs or take out trash. Of course I could get back in, but it was just annoying.

One other thing I would add is to get quality batteries. I tried getting cheap brand batteries for a while, but they're not worth it. Get good duracell/energizer brands and it will last several months.
