it seems internet speed has diminishing returns when you're talking about streaming/downloading speeds on kodi. looks like available RAM is the biggest factor since pretty much everyone has some form of high speed internet. since i don't have or need 4K anything and HD is good enough for me, i won't be getting any new versions of the firetv until they up the RAM.

Just a quick question. Is there any specific reason you chose Fire over Roku? We have 5 (4 TVs & one for traveling). The content is incredible. Also have a Chromecast to cast programs from laptop, tablet, phone when the channels were web-only (History, Bravo, AMC, etc). Now we never use it as all those are available.

Yes, apparently you can.
Kodi on Roku
Says use Kodi Genesis? XBMC is supported on Roku. (I have thought about setting up XBMC, but really I have no use as Roku Media Player will play all my stored movies, music and pictures from all DLNA devices.)

I have a Roku but have looked at the Fire a good bit and I'd say the main differences is no Kodi on Roku. They have Plex but it's not as well supported on the dark side of the internet as Kodi. If you want illegal streams Fire is a better option. I picked the Roku 3 in part because of the headphone jack in the remote. I use that quite a bit and I don't believe the Fire has that.

Did you actually read the article? It's kind of obtusely written almost like it was computer generated for search engine optimization, but pretty much every headline that talks about installing kodi on roku is followed up by a paragraph that says you can't.
Headline:
quote:
Kodi On Roku 3 (Roku 3 Kodi) or Kodi on Roku 4 (Roku 4 kodi).
So it does work

quote:
The software of all Roku models is similar means they all are native C/C++ application that’s why Kodi app for roku is not possible until Roku changes its software.
Or not

The only thing that works is using Kodi on another device like your PC to download stuff and then use a media server like Plex to access those files.

Fire is better for those streams you talked about over Roku? I would think that would be just the opposite? Have thought about setting up Plex channel & server as well, but just find I would have very few uses except for the nice interface and box covers/metadata for it as I already have thousands of movies stored on my secondary router. It would be nice to record and play back later, though.

I agree! Yes you can. Then, no absolutely impossible. WTF? LOL

Fire isn't better, Kodi is better. You can install Kodi on Fire, you can't on Roku. If your goal is to only access things illegally Fire >>>>>>> Roku.

Plex would work well for this. I have a combination of movies from DVD rips and TV shows that I DVR from TV network streaming apps using PlayOn and I use Plex to access them because it is a nice interface for doing that.
They are adding a new feature in beta right now to let it DVR local TV you get over antenna. You'd have to get the paid version of Plex for that though.

Or just use windows media center on a computer and use it as a media server/DVR for OTA channels. Install the PVRWMC addon in Kodi and watch live or recorded tv on any device on your network.

Have you setup your Windows Media Center computer w/ a decoder card? Does PVRWMC use DLNA? Are you able to play from any DLNA server in your household?

That doesn't really matter with something like Plex. PlayOn technically is it's own media server, but it's interface is crap so I just use it for its DVR ability and use Plex as the media server. Just add wherever the files are saved to the Plex library and you'll be able to access them from your streaming box.

Thanks, Tiger. Doesn't it automatically scan the titles and pull down the covers and info about those movies? The Plex setups from the previous year or two were very impressive.

I have a very simple NAS/upnp or whatever..I just clicked a couple buttons on my Asus router after I hooked up a usb3 drive directly to the router.
Plex server runs on a hardwired pcb that lives in my basement.. Which also points to to the NAS share to index the movies and music as I download them.
I can either access the network share directly using the built in Vizio app, connect and let Kodi index the movies, or simply run Plex which has already indexed them.
For UHD you have to directly connect to the network share as Plex doesn't currently support UHD (well it supports it but it transcodes it to HD before serving it to your tv)

Appreciate it. I was going w/ a Linux setup until I realized it would just be redundant as I already have a media setup that can be loaded on a NAS that would serve as both.

I don't think the TV has it but I've been connecting my BT headphones to the stick every night. I fall asleep with the TV on and haven't woken up with a cord around my neck like I did with the roku 3.
