Salaries for programmers in BR is worse than I thought. Look at this job posting.

Software Engineer ($45k - $57k)
So basically they want a recent CS grad for $45k or someone with a couple of years experience for up to $57k that can also attain security clearance with the Federal government. Usually that bumps the wages up. It doesn't appear to be a job posted for H-1Bs since it doesn't have unrealistic expectations and also the government clearance thing.
Meanwhile in Dallas they're starting competent people off at $80k.

That’s the starting salary of MIS graduates in the mid-late 90s. I’m sure computer science grads were slightly higher.

Most Baton Rouge jobs tend to pay less than the rest of the country. The starting requirements to get any sort of tech job in this city tend to be unrealistic though, especially considering the pay.

Just thinking of living and working in Baton Rouge gives me a knot in my stomach

Been a number of threads about this recently. IBM came here because of the cheap labor

I'm comfortable here because it's my home but I worry I'm doing my kids a disservice. We live in Central so the schools aren't terrible, but still..

reason most tech skilled college grads leave state right after graduation.I left 14 years because of these types of offers. This is why houson, austin, dallas, alt, jax etc.. will always have an endless supply of tech grads from la.

Starting salary for L3 software engineers in the SF Bay Area is 4 times that. If you are a young recent college graduate with a CS degree, you should be heading out to the west coast asap.

Doesn't matter when the cost of living is also multiplied by 4.

you can make more money, CoL adjusted, in Texas or NC than the bay area. people in SF are living with roommates while people in Dallas are living in McMansions.

Unemployment in that sector is practically in negative numbers in DFW right now. All unemployment across all sectors is down to about 3% in DFW.
Housing cost is up (although a bit stagnant due to rising interest rates) but it's really a seller's market as far as jobs go in this area.

I don't think it is.
Housing may be 4x but all the rest of your expenses are not multiplied by 4. COL might be double. A lot of younger folks employ a strategy of living in as cheap of housing as possible for 2 to 5 years while they save up for a down payment.
Long story short a family making $480k in the bay area is not necessarily worse off than a family making $120k in BR. It's not really apples to apples.

One thing that hurt BR was when Amedisys closed down it's custom development operations (for the most part) a few years back. That put a lot (100+ for sure) of experienced (mostly good) developers on the market in a 2 month span. That is when I saw salaries in BR start to creep down. It's also when I changed my niche in the industry.

Part of the problem is BR, but the other part is that it's an entry level job. Entry level people are generally not worth what you're paying them even at that salary level until they learn some. And it's really hard to figure out who can hack it and who can't before they start work, so the average will be pretty low.

Are you sure it isn't a fake job posting by a company checking a box to try and import an H2B?

its not.
Housing in sf or Sunnyvale nearly is but you can live in San Mateo or some east bay bedroom and commute either way. And you will have access to hotbed of people and the latest ideas.
