I know there is a "cutting the cord" thread already but to keep from searching through 50 pages I have a simple question. How do these devices work, do you need wifi to use them, if so I have the personal hotspot on my phone would that be sufficient?

You need Internet. Wifi or ethernet.

If you try to stream on these devices using a phone's hotspot as the source, I predict that you will need a new tv after you throw something through it out of buffering frustration.

Thanks. One more, Roku or Firestick?

Roku has a much better interface, IMO, but the FireStick is very popular because it can run Kodi (which supports plug-ins that allow folks to illegally access protected video content). I have both and I like the Roku far, far better. I do not use Kodi, btw.

Neither.
Get an android box from Amazon. Make sure it's a dual feed.

The Roku works better for me, but the interface on apps such as ps Vue and watch ESPN are so much better on the fire stick. Also Kodi...

Picked up the Roku for $50 at Walmart. It works great with the mobile hotspot on my ATT iphone

If your tv allows mirroring, you can use your phone via Wi-Fi and mirror it onto the tv.
Hope you have unlimited data.
