I’d like to potentially add a hot spot to my plan to have around in case of power outages.

I’m in the process of outfitting my home to be able to run certain appliances via generator during an outage. But for internet what are my options? Are there pay as you go options? This is only
For the occasional outage and hopefully not for long lasting use.

Why couldn’t you use your home internet off the generator?

He means in case the internet goes out. Cable goes out all the time, especially if a storm knocks over a bunch of lines.

It's good to have a wireless backup/redundancy in these cases if the internet is critical for you.

Is that possible? I have cox internet so if the power for the neighborhood is down wouldn’t that render their equipment down too?

Not if it’s underground.

My neighbor had a battery backup on his modem/router and docking station/monitors, and has been able to work with internet when we've had a power outage. Of course that was just for a few hours, but I guess it all depends on how the cable company has their stuff set up.

Most common Disaster Recovery (DR) options for internet involve cell service. In theory you could use your cell with hotspot feature or add a separate hotspot device. Separate device normally carries a monthly charge.

I have one and have used it when my internet was out for a few days. Biggest issue is that the cell signal isn’t great at my house.

I have a cell booster but it runs off the internet so doesn’t help when internet is out.

Hear me out. Connect the booster to your poor cell service internet via the hotspot feature on your phone. It will boost the signal, giving you better internet speeds, which will in turn make the cell booster more effective, which will make your speeds faster.... In about 30 seconds you’ll have the fastest internet connection in the world. Now, I’m not responsible for any extra charges that end up on your AT&T bill.

I have a hotspot as part of my plan, but I have to carry an extra phone line for it. Verizon charges me $10.36 a month. I primarily use it on vacations to have a more secure internet if I need to jump on work stuff or be able to stream if that feature is blocked/slow.
