Ok, playing around with W11 on my home network.

I have a cheap but still very functional Brother laserjet printer, NOT wifi on it's own.
I connected it to one of those cheap mini pc's, running W11 home.

After dicking around, I was able to enable sharing with credentials across the network (other W11 pc's at my house), and now I'm curious if I can do the same with our cellphones. I want to be able to connect to my local wifi network, pull up a file on my phone, and print it to that printer.

Using the printing app, I can find my HP inkjet (which is wifi), but that's costly (I only use it for color printing now, so not basic documents). I do see an option to select an IP address, but haven't set up a static IP yet for this cheapo PC, and would prefer not to if I can get away with it. And beyond that, I figure I still would need to enter the correct credentials to access it.

I've googled some, but there is mostly just connecting to wifi printers. Again, what I want to do is connect to a shared printer on the network, that isn't wifi on it's own. Thanks

Using an old Pixel 5a on my home network with an even older Dell C2660dn Laser printer, I opened a pdf file in firefox and was able to print it. It did show a popup that said that the document would go through several servers in order to be printed - don't know what that is about, but again, it did print properly. Hope this helps.

Attached printer via USB to a Raspberry Pi running as a CUPS server. Android can attach the CUPS server and print as long as they are on the same subnet (different subnet will work but takes a little more work for discovery)

When you connect/print to a WiFi printer, you’re doing that via your local network. That printer is connected to the same router a wired printer is connected to. Is your printer WiFi-direct on its own private network?

Any possibility your router has print sharing builtin? Then could connect printer direct to router and make it accessible from router GUI. At least i know some netgear and asus models had that capability

Try NetPrinter. It supports SMB.

Check here if your printer is supported.

That looks promising;

I have a Brother HL-L2300D. Not wifi, just USB to a networked computer.

That database lists the printer... I'll try it. I wouldn't think it would list if it wouldn't work,

so... I'm trying that out... I have to figure out what protocol W11 uses. I seem to remember they got away from SMB due to vulnerabilities.

Your settings should look something like this.

Host is your PC's IP address.
Share name is your printer's share name.
I couldn't get it to work with my Microsoft Account credentials, so I had to create a local user account called printer.

I got as far as the print job showing up in my print queue, but my printer isn't supported so I got a print error.

Can I set this up to read host name instead of ip address?

Yes, if you're running a DNS to resolve the host name. It doesn't seem to support mDNS.

SMB v1 was disabled, but not v2, IIRC. I had to manually re-enable it to connect to a brand new smart speaker.
