Financing a depreciating piece of hardware. Interesting.

If interest is 0% you'd be dumb not to use their money.

Nothing is free. You finance a phone with 36 obligated service payments at $70/month. I buy a phone and used mint for $15/month. Your “free financing” is $55/month for some users.

Maybe he doesn't want mint mobile?

Well it’s not tethered to mint. I can switch today. And my point isn’t just for this one off. It applies to everyone. You take a deal for free financing at Verizon you are locked into their company for 36 months unless you pay it off. Any price increase, high monthly rate, all tied in.
When you own a phone free and clear you are in complete control of where you take it, however often you want to switch.

Any phone purchased directly from a manufacturer is not locked to a specific carrier and can be taken anywhere.
I’m near certain Apple offers zero percent financing, and I’d assume Google and Samsung do as well.
The 9.99/mo deal that guy referenced is carrier subsidized, so we’re not really talking apples to apples.

The thread is about Android but yeah you can take a loan out for an Apple IPhone as well... directly.
Id say the vast majority of financing is happening through carriers. Hence my example on the extra cost of financing by being locked in to a postpaid carrier which can be 75% more expensive per month than alternative options.
Also, if you want to trade it, sell it, it’s much easier with a paid in full phone on swappa or eBay.
But by all means, you can lock yourself in up a 3 year proverbial contract for a Pixel 7 in a high cost postpaid plan and tell me there’s no more cost to do so, lol.

I've been with them 20+ years. Why would I change now?

I get that. My mention was the facts. You’ll have one offs like OP, who’ll knowingly / gladly pay $600-$900 extra per year plus taxes and fees to have the privilege to be a loyal customer of postpaid Verizon.
For the others who aren’t married to a company sucking you dry, there is a cost to locking yourself into a contractual obligation of free financing.
Some could have the same access to Verizon towers with a paid in full phone and save $10,000 over the same 20 year period for not being that loyal customer or the smart but ignorant customer that I was trying to warn.
1st year of kids tuition or a boast of loyalty? Everyone has their pride in some cause.
