Scoop: There are about to be a lot more major departures of top folks at @OpenAI tonight and I assume Altman will make a statement tonight. But, as I understand it, it was a “misalignment” of the profit versus nonprofit adherents at the company. The developer day was an issue.

From what I gather, Sam is associated with OpenAI’s shift from pure nonprofit to more of a for-profit model. Looks like the board is majority nonprofit-ish (i.e. they don’t have equity in the company).

This makes sense. I remember Elon rightfully complaining as he had donated a lot of money to it when it was nonprofit and then all of a sudden they were worth billions.

I’m still confused as to how a non-profit to which I donated ~$100M somehow became a $30B market cap for-profit. If this is legal, why doesn’t everyone do it?

One thing I love about the OpenAI debacle is that the it's scientists versus tech bros where the tech bros want to create a trillion dollar enterprise AI company while the scientists want to create an AI that can replace humans in every job but don't worry it will be "programmed to love humanity."

I'm actually on the side of the tech bros here versus the people trying to create Skynet and thinking they can control it.

Sounds like you have that reversed. Usually it's the scientists that want the brakes pumped and implications taken into consideration while those with dollar signs in their eyes want to push ahead despite the implications.

For the record, I am in IT and also on the side of "let's not let this turn into the next cyberweapon" crowd.

Well… we all knew ChatGPT was just the beginning.

This drama is just the prelude to what comes next. Power abhors a vacuum.

-Sam was trying to push Helen out for her academic paper critical of OAI; Ilya sided with her to push out Sam
-The Anthropic folks had also tried to push Sam out
-There are 6 board members bc of disagreement on who to add
-Helen ok to destroy OAI for the mission

We are saying the same thing. Maybe I didn't word mine correctly. The tech bros want to full steam ahead and create a $1T company as soon as they can. The researchers are all about creating AGI that loves humans.

Now he's back again after basically announcing his departure. They're going to make a Netflix series or movie out of this mess one day.
