i just do it both ways when wires are the same color and if it doesnt work one way i try the other.
You should spend some of your home automation budget on a multimeter

Eta: was also wondering why you had to ask for OT help on wiring. Now I see why

i think you did get it reversed.
ok lets try this again.
for the leviton switch:
hole(s) marked BK get the TWO black wires at the bottom of the pic (one in each hole by BK)
WH is neutral, that gets the white pigtail
hole marked RD gets the ONE black wire at the top of the switch in the pic.
is that right?

to be fair i had the right 'theories' but needed confirmation what i thought would work would work.

Seems more likely, but no one can say 100% without seeing the actual switch. Most likely those two are connected to the power side unless he is controlling more than one item on that switch.

hence CAD's patented 'try it one way then the other' method
i will say in the last year i've learned a shite-ton about electrical wiring. every switch i opened seemed to have some new configuration for me to learn.

Same here. I initially started out by changing all my outlets to tr ones. I was presented with some pretty jerry rigged configurations. Just recently, I was installing a smart switch and found they used lamp cord to run power to another switch. Have no clue if that was unsafe, but it's now been corrected.

i'll be honest. i have a multimeter and i barely know how to use the dang thing.
Kinda pathetic i know.

I was able to scavange another pic from my phone which gives a different view of the switch & actually inside the wall a little bit:

so it is a double gangbox. then the two wires at the bottom are your line. And your neutral is in the box capped off like it should be.
run your double blacks to BLK
run your single black to RD
run an extension from your white to WH
run ground to green
run your double blacks to BLK
run your single black to RD

there you go.
there's your white pigtail spaghetti monster.
that black at the bottom is clearly passing the load along to the other switch.
i think you'll nail this on the first try.

yep. DONT FORGET THE GREEN. lazy people (like CAD) ignore the green/bare but you really should connect that if the switch has a screw for it.

Am I the only one who doesn't see a green wire in the pic?

Bare wire = green wire. It's just a ground.
You can barely see it behind the white on that pic above

gotcha. i havent gotten my switches yet. I have 2 motion/timer switches coming in tomorrow for my closets. And someone got greedy and bought all the lutron switches from the HDs here before i got to get one or 2. So im still looking for them. Amazon is still the cheapest so far at like 48 bucks.

Trade you Lutron for your Jeep

Lutron Caseta? Lowes should carry them as well.

What are y'all doing about under cabinet lighting? I have multiple 80s fluorescent strips around my house I'd love to replace with something nicer and bonus if it's smart.
