I was looking through Netflix last night and was surprised by the amount of content. I watched the fireplace for a solid 5 minutes

are you paying the premium for 4k content?

I had a grandfathered in 7.99 account that I had through iTunes. I realized you don't get 4k content with that. So...I had to stop by subscription through iTunes but then I had to wait for the period to run out before getting the new 11.99 one.
So...I decided to use another email to roll with the first free month of the 11.99 plan until my old account frees up.

Long story short, yes I am now.

You can easily do it with a laptop. It's color calibration, image sharpness, etc. It plays video patterns like the one below while you adjust your specific tv. HDMI is the best option for mirroring/displaying the videos from your laptop to the TV in as close to full resolution as possible (assuming your graphics card can output to at least 1080P, if not 4K).

They raised my $8/mo to $10 this month anyway so it's only $2 difference.

Just saw Amazon fire only supports 4k for their service. Lame. Roku 4 supports 4 or 5 4k apps

this thread is already depressing me. let me get this straight:

- netflix 4k requires you to upgade your service
- youtube 4k uses dp9 chip not supported by many tvs
- amazon fire tv only allows 4k content from..amazon and not other apps
- roku 4 supports 4K (the stick does not) but is limited to maybe 5-6 apps
- PLEX 4K 'support' means that it will transcode your 4K to 1080P before delivering to your TV
- direct tv 4k packages includes like 2 channels
- comcast has ZERO 4K and is over a year delayed in the promise to have 4K available by olympics
- dish tv hopper '4' supports 4K but not sure how many channels

fire stick, chromecast and roku sticks don't support 4K

Netflix 4K has always been a few bucks more, and for the pretty solid arse selection, well worth.

Amazon App runs perfect as well as YouTube, and the major movie apps with 4K such as Fandango Now, UltraFlix, and Vudu. This is of course on an expensive arse Samsung that has every app imaginable and a quad core processor though.

I'm guessing the cheap TV's lack in the Smart TV area? Have to cut corners somewhere though, even if Smart/OS features are one of the most important parts of a TV in 2016.

Vizio has built in apps but like you pointed out lacks a chip to decode YouTube so I would need a box for that. I want to get my 4k torrents and 4k phone videos onto the tv with as little trouble as possible

If anyone is planning to buy a home receiver that has 4K pass through make sure to keep your receipt handy. Bestbuy has come to my house twice with a Pioneer Elite and a Sony both HDCP 2.2 but neither worked when trying to view Direct TV 4K channels. The 4K channels worked perfect but when we hooked up the receiver we got audio but no video

What was the fix ?

Sometimes power cycling the gear or putting a splitter behind the AVR will fix that.

OK so here are some new things I've learned..I can cast directly to my Vizio even without a Chromecast

Thought i was going crazy into I found this article online:

LINK

Looks like it only works for Netflix and YouTube right now.

I tried hooking up my laptop via HDMI and playing a 4k video but I just got the little spinning wheel. The tv did show 2160 on screen so that's good but the video never played.

I'm going to upgrade Netflix today and try that out when I get home.

Hopefully I'll have a better read on how all the 4k stuff shakes out soon.

Biggest question now is what type of smart app device I want to use. I might actually wait for the next rev of Roku or something since better hardware should mean more 4k options.

is there a particular calibration video you recommend? Who has actually done this before?

I saw the "professional" calibration options in Vizio.. Holy moly Batman. That would take me 12 hours just to get through all of them.

Just watched first season of Stranger Things and an underwater "moving art" thing they had. Jesus Christ this is blowing my mind.
