I'm looking to put a timer on my 'dumb' pool pump so i dont have to always remember to turn it on/off and its a damn big drain on my electricty.

i got nothing. anyone know of something I'm missing?

i think i'm going with the $85 Honeywell AUBE. Not a fan of the intermatics..which seems the only competition.

Is it hardwired or plugged in?

the pump is hardwired to a circuit breaker at the moment connected to the wall behind the pool.

i cringe whenever i flip the breaker on/off which happens frequently when you're backwashing the pool, adding chlorine tabs or cleaning the pump basket.

if i'm going to add an actual on/off switch, i'd prefer it be smart but i don't see that as an option.

relay

Could use something like this. Then it controls a relay designed to handle the amps of your pump.

no..thats getting beyond my budget and knowledge.

the honeywell is $85 and the point is to shut the pump off except for maybe 4-5 hours/day so i wont have that $50 monthly 'bump' on my bill in the summer.

if i'm saving $30+/mo it wont take but a season or 2 for this to pay for itself. (since its already mid august i'll probably close the pool up in a month)

eta i might suck it up for another month then look again in the spring to see if any newer/better products are on the market.

Have you ever programmed an arduino? Would be a pretty simple code to control the relay. Just giving options.

I am not super knowledgeable about my pool equipment, but you don't have one of these attached to the breaker box?

ETA - sorry didn't see you weren't a fan of intermatics. Why do you not like them?

I just installed a custom pool pump controls system to replace my broken Intermatic timer. It turns the pool pump on and off based on the day's direct sunlight hours and counts the motor's run time. I can control it remotely from anywhere using a smartphone, iPad, computer, etc. I used a RaspberryPi instead of an Arduino.

no i dont. thats one of the (only) options i see.

i like the honeywell b/c its got great reviews and its digital and gives me more flexibliity to run the pump for short periods of times several times a day (helps with skimmer/debris collection) rather than run it for 6 hours in one block.

Thanks. Good to know for the future. Could you add more metal trippers to the intermatic timer to get the multiple shorter periods? I understand it is a less elegant solution.

It was a system I designed myself because I wanted something better than what was out there. Overall, all the materials cost me about $225, which included some re-wiring to the pump.

You can set multiple on off cycles with the intermatics. It was my pool has, and it has never been a big issue

yo CAD, what indoor smart switches are you using? o have a 3 switch panel(a light and fan are on 2 switched and flood lights are on the other). So i would need 2 dimmers and one regular switch.

do you know anything like this?

Yes I have a thread on smart switches. What do you have in mind? What is your brain? Wink?

ok let me look for the thread. Well my Wink is having a tough time. I sent it off and got it back.... It connects to my network but i have yet to be able to get the light bulbs or my door lock to connect.

i would like to go ahead and get the smart switchs where i can dim them by hand first while i trouble shoot the wink.

Leviton is $49 at home depot and seems to do the trick both manually and with wink.. Both on/off plus dimming.

I confirmed it takes a non led down to zero and an led bulb just gets dim.

What form factor? This is the rectangle switch and it (and most smart switches) will need the common aka white wire to work properly since it needs to be energized all the time for the wifi/zwave to work.

Eta have you tried resetting the wink and the light bulbs and lock?

I had to reset my bulbs to get them to pair after I moved.
