The DVD player has to be capable of reading a DVD-R specifically.

Edit: Have you tried a computer as well, or just regular DVD players?

The shelf life of a burned DVD is only about 5-10 years. "Pressed" CDs/DVDs/BluRays last longer, but the [re]writable ones are not as stable. If you can't play them on multiple different players, the video is probably gone for good.

If you think some of them won't play because they are scratched, you can buff them with toothpaste. Do NOT scrub around the disc, instead wipe from the center out in straight lines.

There are some programs that try to read bad discs, just google "recover dvd". I have no idea what you should expect from these programs. There are also specialty data recovery shops that charge exorbitant fees for recovering data from failed drives and disks, but I doubt the videos are worth that much to you.

Good luck!

Only tried my PS4 and a regular DVD player. I thought about trying a computer but My laptop doesn’t have a DVD player in it.

Oddly I was able to get one of the oldest ones to play. It’s almost 20 years old.

Yea, I’m looking at some YouTube videos now on ways to get the scratches out, hope that I can get some of them to work.

I ended up getting a couple of them to work, so I don’t think that’s the problem.

Appreciate the help from both of you guys

It's a reason that ripping CDs and DVDs was never sustainable....it was simply a bridge to the gap between Blockbuster and Netflix/Hulu/Google/Spotify/etc
