You do not need to wipe anything for flashing a kernel on a Nexus device.
yes you should and you being an idiot saying otherwise. with the custom changes made to the kernel, especially if you are flashing kernels often, you should always wipe cache before flashing.
most developers that flash an update through their own app force the app to wipe cache (and dalvik for android below 5.0) for a reason.

What? There isn't a Nexus LED, it is a green charging light. Nothing at all like the N5 and N4 that had a notification LED with full control. Google disabled it on the N6 by default for a reason.

Literally 100% wrong. All of it.
I mean it won't hurt anything, just not necessary on a Nexus device when flashing a kernel. Only need to wipe caches with ROMs.
Hell, even some of the kernels specifically say you don't need to even though it's commonly known by now for most.

No need to wipe anything on a nexus . Just flash

Yep . You still wanna wipe those if your flashing a RoM , but kernel isn't necessary, won't hurt anything if you do , just isn't necessary
You can find more in the other kernel threads as well. I don't know who told you you needed to, but you don't, and haven't needed to in a long time. Again, won't hurt anything, but an unnecessary step.

Got my dbrand skin today.
Started out with this case:
Put the dbrand on:
And the clear back case with it:
The clear back case is pretty close to impossible to photograph well because of the glare.
Still not sure what I will stick with. With a screen protector and the skin, I'm tempted to go case-less, but I know if I do that the frame will get scratched and scuffed pretty bad eventually.

Nexus noob here. Was finally able to pick one up from ATT yesterday( after much arguing with the sales associated who wanted me to switch plans, I have a very old plan with unlimited data).
My real question is what to do to get the full Android/Nexus experience. I was able to delete all of ATT's bloatware apps and remove the ATT logo from the back. I am just not familiar at all with "rooting' or unlocking bootloaders. I am coming from a Galaxy S3 which i enjoyed for the most part, but understand that pure android is 1000x better.
Any suggestions?

Download Wug's toolkit, and you'll be able to do all of that shite with a few button clicks:
LINK
I had about 10 minutes of experience with Android prior to the Nexus 6, and I unlocked bootloader and rooted on day 1. The first thing you should do after root is get rid of the boot animation/sound.
This is why I haven't stepped foot in an ATT store in many years. I always, always go to radio shack because they are not on commission to change your plan. The most they'll do is try to sell you an extended warranty. However, in this case, Nexus 6 is not at Radio Shack, so I ordered online. Believe it or not, ordering online (for the subsidized price) does give you the option to keep your existing unlimited plan. I'm still on a very old plan with 700 shared minutes, 200 texts/month per phone, and unlimited data (throttles at 5GB). The day they make me get rid of it is the day I move to Straight Talk.

Curious, does ATT have native wireless tethering for free?
Here is a good place to start... Nexus 6 guide . That will keep you busy for a while. Also, this will wipe your device but it is worth it once for this.

I don't know about the newer shared data plans, but they definitely do not allow it on unlimited plans.

Ok. So after watching a few videos I finally felt comfortable enough to go ahead and unlock the bootloader. Although I am not 100% sure what that actually does for me.
I may go ahead and root later on.

Well in simple terms you can now install custom software on your device including custom recovery and custom ROMS.
Installing root is pretty painless compared to unlocking the bootloader. So it is usually a no brainer to obtain root privileges after unlocking the bootloader.

Alright here we go, enjoyed stock with only a kernel for a few weeks but it's ROM time now.
Trying out Elix-R.
Back in a flash, pun intended.

Rumors of a update starting 12/15. Can't vouch for the guy but he is a verified Sprint employee.
I can't say I have any of these issues but it's an update nonetheless.
Fixes/Enhancements:
Android update to assure all Google applications can be installed properly.
Enhancements to device call stability.
Fixes an application install issue.
Fixes modem issue.
Software version: LRX22C

I'm on the 5.0.1 and 5.0 hybrid with this ROM.
So damn smooth.

They took the 5.0.1 portion from the N9 I guess? I saw the ROMS that have that but didn't have a chance to look at the details.

If I'm rooted and decrypted, what do I need to do to get the update?
Posted on 12/9/14 at 7:07 pm to ILikeLSUToo
Flash the factory image when it's available
Or just wait a day or two and all of the ROMS will be updated to it.

To be clear if you flash the complete factory image as downloaded from the Google repository it will full wipe.
I unzip the factory image and take out system and modem and flash those in fastboot.

I have all of my apps+data backed up via Titanium Backup Pro. On my phone, in the cloud, and on my PC. I take no chances.
That's for ROM switching though, no need to use a factory image when you're using ROMS and they update so quickly.
