Early reviews are saying the camera is great, which is good to hear and was expected with the higher price tag, no short cuts anymore with this bad boy.
Review comparison to the Note 4 say the details aren't quite as good as the Note 4's, but the colors are more lifelike and overall better than the Note 4's, also that night/dark pictures are much better on the N6 than the Note 4, mainly thanks to the new OIS sensor and the dual LED ring.
Also, the N6 does in fact do away with the LED Notification light that the N4 and N5 have, but more than bests it by using Motorola's active display.

I'm going to miss the LED. I like being able to glance at my phone on my desk, and see if I missed something.

Have you not seen Motorola's exclusive feature from the Moto X called Moto Display? It makes use of the AMOLED display to show a notification on the screen and only lights up those pixels to display while the rest of the screen is still off, still in it's low power state.
It's actually fricking fascinating, IMO.

And so it turns out that Ambient Display is indeed Google’s take on Motorola’s Moto Display. The Nexus 6 has an option within display settings that says, “wake screen when device picked up or notifications arrive.” When this option is enabled, notifications will appear on the screen when they arrive or the handset is picked up. And let me say right here: this is interesting. You see, Motorola’s use of the AMOLED screen for what was originally called “Active Notifications” gave AMOLED another reason to use on a smartphone. AMOLED’s greatest strength is that the screen only illuminates the pixels that are required: a black pixel is not even turned on and so requires no power. This feature has been under-utilized by Samsung without using an expensive case; their devices have a notification LED but to check what that is for, one must turn the entire screen on. Motorola threw this idea on the head by having a small part of the screen show the notification. This means that for most users, most of the time it’ll save battery as we won’t be lighting up our whole screen to check what’s just arrived. And now it’s being introduced into stock Android, although devices will need an AMOLED screen to properly benefit.
It's actually fricking fascinating, IMO.

I love active display on my moto x. I didnt wanted to lose my led light from the gnex, but this is so much better.

Yeah it's great, super excited for it on the N6 baked into stock Android functionality.

Holy shite thats amazing.

So, it stays on? I was under the impression that it only came on for a few seconds when the notification is received and when you pick it up.
Posted on 10/23/14 at 9:04 pm to h0bnail
It turns off after however long you choose, default is I believe 5 seconds, you can set it to 3 and off or I believe up to 30 seconds on the Moto X.
If you pick up the phone, or tilt the display, etc, it will also light up showing you your notifications with no touching of the screen needed.
It's similar in that respect to Paranoid Android's "Peek" feature I've used since they incorporated it earlier this year on the N5. Video: It's set for 10 seconds by default in PA ROM
It "listens" for that period of time for movement via it's sensors and gyroscope to know when it's being picked up or tiles, and shows the notifications. It's really cool tech, it's why I love PA so much, only ROM I run on every Nexus.

What is the price point on this phone?
Posted on 10/23/14 at 9:22 pm to LSUSUPERSTAR
I don't believe any carrier has released the price yet on contract, I'd guess $299 like the Note 4. Maybe $249 for the 32GB and $299 for the 64GB.
Off contract is the only thing we know so far, and that's $649 for the 32GB.
But there is...
So it may be $199 for the 32GB and $249 for the 64GB.

Meanwhile, the four national carriers are expected to sell the Nexus 6 with a subsidized price of as low as $200 with a two-year contract, and separate pricing for installment plans. AT&T will be a Nexus provider for the first time, and Verizon Wireless will carry the phone despite a spotty history with the Nexus line.
So it may be $199 for the 32GB and $249 for the 64GB.

I also use PA. Sounds like I still have to pick up the phone, unless I happen to look within that window when the notification is received.
Posted on 10/23/14 at 9:29 pm to h0bnail
Correct, you have 10 seconds in the PA version and that's the only option, so you'd have to look at your screen sitting on a table within 10 seconds of it going off or something, to see it.
Otherwise it hides until it detects you are looking at the screen, either via just tilting it up a bit on the table, or completely picking it up to your face, in which it shows the notifications, and you can then just touch the notification and it will launch the app for it from a single touch.
The Google/Moto one is different because it's an AMOLED display and can just turn on the 100 or so pixels only and show a notification while the rest of the screens pixels are turned off, using less power/battery and can be set to stay on for longer for that reason. In PA/other phones, the whole screen has to light up to show the notification, so you get less battery with it on and it turns off quicker and can't be adjusted.
We don't know what the settings are for it yet, so it may be able to stay on until cleared like the LED.

I was hoping the price would be closer to the N5 pricing. No more cheap phones I guess.
Posted on 10/23/14 at 9:55 pm to LSUSUPERSTAR
Only on contract like all the other phones, now. But also a much higher end device overall.
Posted on 10/23/14 at 10:01 pm to UltimateHog
I'm switching to the family share plan to try and save some money. No more contracts.

I'm getting it off contract I haven't dealt with a contract in years and never will, but I'll also get $300 for my N5 and put it towards that hefty price so really 350 out of pocket, same as the N5.

Get the G3 851 tmobile variant. Sim unlock it for your carrier. Root, debloat, install Zone rom. Order a wireless charging replacement back. Get a tylt vu charging dock. Get the free battery/charger promo from LG. Get a Supcase unicorn beetle case. P R O F I T.
Still rocking a Galaxy S3 and I'm up for renewal. I'm grandfathered in with unlimited data, so will be getting the phone through AT&T with another 2 year contract.
I was thinking of going with the LG G3 at first, but then changed my mind to the Note 4 for the latest and greatest.
However, I didn't realize that the Note series with AT&T has unlocked bootloaders... and I'm not too fond of Touch Wiz.
Do you know if the AT&T variant of the G3's bootloader can be unlocked in order to flash ROMS and eventually load Lollipop ROMS without losing root?

Same here, but I just switched to the new plans. I've been throttled twice in the last 4 months and it sucks. I'm going to ride my S3 until it falls apart to try and save some money. I might get a N5 or try one of those low priced Windows phones. I hope with how the new plan pricing models are set up, that phones will start lowering in price for better competition.

Forewarning--watch out for the things they don't tell you when changing to that plan. For instance, they will tell you that you get a $25 discount on each line, so effectively each additional line (not the primary) only costs $15. What they won't tell you is that when you upgrade your phone they take the discount back and you are now paying $40/month for that line. I did the math--if you have multiple lines and many or all of them plan to upgrade within the next year, you actually lose more money than you save. Sure you can get a little more data, but if you are like 90% of other users in that you use less than 3GB of data per month, you wind up losing money.

The devs have just come up with a work around for the att phones. Its called bump. You can successfully "bump" your att G3 and upload twrp recovery for bumped roms. It was already rootable, but now you can run custom roms once they start popping up for the att G3. Check out the xda forums on the topic. The bump team is currently in the process of creating a website dedicated to bumping the multiple variants of the G3 including att. The tmobile G3 comes with unlocked bootloader. Thats what I have.
