Anyone else get this email? Can’t remember getting this last year.

IMPORTANT TAX INFORMATION
Louisiana law requires that we send you an annual summary of your purchases from Newegg. This summary is a tax document which we are required to send to you by your choice of mail or email. To receive this summary by regular mail, please opt-in here

Aren’t you “supposed” to report purchases from sites like amazon and Newegg who don’t charge sales tax unless you reside in their state?

I’ve literally never reported anything come tax season and I’m not locked up

You are and no one does. I think this is an attempt by Newegg to not have to charge state tax but appease the states in an attempt to get people to file and pay.

Got one also. No idea if they send your info to the state though?

Yeah that is the part I don’t know. I would assume whatever forms newegg sends you has that detail? I have not gone through the wizard yet to select preferred method.

I received one because we've made some purchases via their business account.
Don't know if Newegg references an LA Dept. of Revenue form number or if it's a summary list.

Louisiana changed the law to where you pay tax at time of purchase now.

No. That’s only on 3rd party sellers. If it’s fulfilled by amazon, you don’t pay sales tax.

Amazon often charges sales tax.

The real question is did Newegg send the info to John Bell's tax henchmen.

That would be a dickish move to say the least.

I often share this story when this topic comes up. I don't remember all the details, but it's a good cautionary tale. Back in the 90s, or early 2000s, when cigar smoking was popular, the state convinced the mail order company Thompson Cigars to turn over their customer list. The state didn't know how much if any those customers ordered. They reviewed each customer's tax return to see if they paid any use tax. If they did, the state left them alone. If they didn't, then they started an audit.

I don't know if they are going to do the same thing with Newegg's customers, but it might be worth paying some use tax.

Actually, it's the exact opposite. If it's fulfilled by Amazon you DO pay tax at the time of purchase. 3rd party sellers don't charge sales tax.

I just don't see how it's legal for Louisiana to tax us on stuff we bought out of state. If we need to pay tax, it needs to be to the state where we bought the product.

I've noticed they do it on a lot of stuff now:
-My Google Play subscription used to be a flat 9.99 but now it's like 10.29.
-My peloton bike subscription used to be a flat 39.99 but is now 42.xx something.
