Ok I am just getting into the Plex game and have a couple questions. I'm just now starting to take purchased DVDs and use Handbrake to get them to my laptop's hard drive. Here's some dumb questions but I don't care:

1) I can only rip Movie DVDs and not Blu-Ray's, correct?
2) Can I rip UHD cd's on to my hard drive with handbrake?
3) Does anyone use the Plex Pass for Live TV and is it worth 5$ a month?
4) What's the normal load time for connecting to you Plex server from your phone when you're off your home network? I.E. When I try and connect with my phone to my plex server (NVidia shield or laptop) and I'm out of town on work.

at the risk of sounding..uh...'illegal'...if you own these disk already you can find nice 1080p & UHD copies already ripped and looking good online.

its a damn shame the pysical media doesnt come with free use (aka plex) versions so you don't have to kill yourself trying to rip it with shitty software and doing a mediocre job.

its 2018 and i have my killer AV setup going..why on God's green earth do i want to have to go hunt for plastic disks and worry about scratching/breaking/losing/DVD player breaking issues.

its fricking stupid.

If a friend wanted to find said site, where might he or she go?

My friend already has legally purchased copies of the DVDs he or she wants, so my friend could easily tell authorities to kick rocks. My friend is a wily one at times.
Also, do you run the Live TV feature with Plex? Apparently I have the one Hauppage TV Tuner that WON'T work on my Nvidia Shield. Unless I want to go and plug it into my laptop, which should work.

If I were going to pay for Plex Pass I'd wait. It seems like about once a quarter they have a deal on the lifetime membership. Like $120 which is like paying 2 years up front.

That being said I would bet that within 2 years the streamers like Sling/Vue will have a lot more of the locals covered. I get all the features I need for free plus I paid $5 for an iPhone and IIRC $5 for an Android app so I get it on my phone and Fire TV. The app is/was free for Roku.

Here's a tutorial for Ripping blurays. LINK The article is made by WinXDVD which is much easier than the free ware solutions for ripping DVDs. When I was ripping regularly I'd say it was worth the $40. It cut a 2 program process into a one program process that I didn't have to babysit as much. It looks like their tool may be DVD only though.

I use iptorrents private tracker. I built up a decent ratio early on so I don't even seed anymore but even when I was I never heard a peep from my ISP and I didn't use a VPN.

I have a couple invites so if you post your email I'll add you.

Look up torrenting. Also you'll need to have a VPN unless you want a letter from your ISP. I think the number is 6 strikes and they'll cancel your account.

Ripping DVDs you own with Handbrake is easy, but I believe you need the correct file in your program/system files. It’s a .dll if I remember correctly. It’s been a while since I’ve had to mess with the software.

For ripping BluRay Disks, I use MakeMKV to rip to MKV, then use the latest Handbrake (different from the one I use with the .dll) to convert from MKV to MP4 and shrink the file size.

The most annoying thing doing this is disks that have Playlist Obfuscation. It’s a pain in the arse when it scans the discs and has 100s of freakin “movies”, all the correct length, but with the segments all mixed up. AVSForums has/had a solid thread on the correct file to use based on the disk purchased.

Did that.

They make this shite so unbelievably annoying and time consuming that it's almost not worth it. I'm just going to get the movies my girls watch OVER and OVER and OVER to avoid streaming over and over. However, with an unlimited plan, I'm almost about to just say FOOK it and move on.
But I do kinda like learning new things so I enjoy bumbling around.

Ok and then one more question about VPNs. I looked up PIA and NordVPN and all but what makes you trust them vs. your ISP?

I've never used iptorrents but is the vpn simply to make it look like you're not from the same ip? I guess I just don't see the reason for VPNs if you're simply trying to hide from the gov't but it may be that you're just trying to mask yourself from the iptorrents site?

Or in other words, why would you trust a VPN computer(s) and network(s) vs. your ISP?

You're not trying to hide from the government, you're trying to hide from your own ISP that is working with/for the movie studios. The Movie and Music industries were able to strong arm the ISPs into doing their dirty work for them so if you are detected torrenting a copyrighted file you'll get a cease and desist letter from your ISP. After 6 strikes your ISP will cancel your Internet account and you'll have to find a new ISP. LINK

I don't torrent often, one of the times I did probably about 4-5 years ago I took pretty much every precaution besides a VPN. I used an IP blocker that blocked known IPs from the Movie and Music industry, I deleted the file as soon as it was downloaded so I wasn't letting others download from me. Still got a letter.

You either pay for a VPN to make downloading files you've already paid for not bite you in the arse, or you need to put in the time to rip the DVDs. Sadly Free is rarely Free.

Yea, I guess I've never used a VPN so do you connect to it vs. your home WiFi? If you're not connecting to the VPN as your internet, I feel like your ISP could still simply track how much bandwidth your pulling and limit the hell out of that. Again though, I don't understand it all that well.

I've looked on iptorrents and those damn movies are easily 40-70gigs, if I was reading it correctly.

Yea, seems that way. I've seen UHD movies on IPTorrents though but unsure if handbrake can convert my UHD DVDs to true UHD mp4s or whatnot?!

what are you looking at that is that big??? the entire Godfather trilogy in UHD?

you should find virtually any movie under 10GB regardless of 1080p or UHD.

plex had trouble streaming raw UDH without transcoding the last time i checked so i haven't really bothered to get much in that format. 1080p looks damn good.
