New Camera Touch control button on the new iPhone 16 looks pretty cool...

Apple today announced the 6.1-inch iPhone 16 and 6.7-inch iPhone 16 Plus, with a key new feature being the Camera Control on the side of the devices.
iPhone 16
As rumored, the Camera Control is positioned below the power button, and you can control various features in the Camera app by pressing or swiping on it. The control sits flush on the iPhone's frame and delivers haptic feedback. Clicking the Camera Control launches the Camera app, and holding it starts a video recording. You can also use the Camera Control to quickly access zoom and other capabilities through a new on-screen overlay.

I love Apple but the lead that they have/had in terms of hardware and specs seems to be diminishing.
Google’s pixel phone seems to be catching up in terms of specs and has the clear edge in terms of ai.
If I didn’t love this Apple Watch Ultra v1 so much, I’d look at the pixel watch and phone.

IMO, these slight nudges are silly. They would be better to move to a 2 year update cycle.
The problem is good is good enough. When web pages open in less than a second, you’ve reached diminishing returns territory.
Oh sure, AI will be a fun toy to goof around with, but I don’t see it being useful for a while.
Camera tech is already overkill. Who really needs a 48+ MP camera?

I do. But not from a low quality phone sensor.
I also don't see how this is all that big of a deal considering you already have a big touch screen right there in front of you. It is nice having physical buttons on a dedicated camera, but this isn't it. I'm talking separate buttons for focus area, af-lock, iso, wb, shutter, etc.

In that case you’re a lot more serious about cameras than most people. Which is totally understandable, but the average person has far superior technology than what they need.

Yeah I agree. Crazy pixel counts with small sensors is marketing talk.
Not a fan of the overly processed photos either. Too much sharpening and filtering. View some of the following images at 100% and you can see what I mean.

The photos look ok on small screens though.

Why? The Apple sheep will all run out to get one.
Tech nerds are the same way with new Androids

While not a significant improvement this year by any means, I feel like it's time to upgrade from my 13 pro. I think it'll be nice having an action button and camera button so that I can open the flashlight or camera without ever having to look at the phone. Plus I'm ready for a better camera and battery life again, and I think Apple Intelligence will be interesting to play with later this year.

Off Topic Rant: For the second year in a row, I've been tasked with putting together the end of the year slide show for the kids middle school MTB team. As part of that, the team has a dropbox/google drive were folks can upload their photos for the "social media team" (the parent who uploads the photos to facebook). myself, and the parents to use. Can I say that I HATE Apple's HEIC format? The video editing programs struggle with it causing more than one crash during final rendering (I assume by having to do more uncompressing than a usual jpg). I pulled my hair out because of it last year. This year I ran every single HEIC file thru Lightroom and Photoshop and just converted them on my own. Knock on wood, I haven't crashed once during rendering this year...
So why can't Apple just use regular JPGs? It's not like the file sizes are THAT much bigger. My assumption is that with the large MP camera's the file sizes are so big for Apple's "limited" storage they have to use a funky file format that NOBODY else uses to save storage space. Nevermind that they are a headache for everyone outside the apple ecosystem. And nobody needs 48 MP for posting to facebook, instagram and Twitter. Even IF someone decided to print something from the image a 48mp image could be printed 40x30 (twice poster size) at 200 dpi. It's overkill. (and yes I know it exists for digital zoom). Everything I shot last weekend on my 24mp DSLR I downsized to 6MP jpgs in camera, because I know that for video, the max resolution I need for 1080p is 1920x1080. Even at 6mp I have tons of head room for zooming.

Shhh. Talk of pixel pitch and noise will make people's heads explode. People don't understand the tradeoff's with the massive in phone cameras.
Rant Off...

I foresee a lot of photos and video from the inside of pocket books and jean pockets.

Apple didn't make HEIC, it's MPEG's format
A lot of software need to update their encoders to better work with HEIC. I don't mind it, it's a better format.
