Just three months after Nest co-founder Tony Fadell left the company and new CEO Marwan Fawaz took over, Alphabet's troubled smart home division, Nest, is apparently experiencing another shakeup. According to a report from Fortune, Google is "absorbing" Nest's software engineers in order to form a "unified Internet of things platform."

Hiroshi Lockheimer, the current head of Android, will lead the group.

While I get that nest has had lots of frustrations, ever since they fired Fadell, in 3 months there has been a quick release of features. And they have the new outdoor camera coming out. So all in all I think getting rid of Fadell is good for the product, and I don't have a problem with moving them under Android.

Maybe they will have a more unified strategy with regards to the connected home.

Your title grossly overstates what happened. Nest isn't being "absorbed". A few dozen Nest employees (out of over 1,000) are moving to Google. Specifically, the Nest employees who work on the IoT stuff ("Works with Nest"/Weave/Brillo).

This makes total sense, and doesn't seem newsworthy at all to me.

link?

I said 4k was about the only recent tech advance worth getting but i wasn't paying $2k+ for that feature alone.

I stand by that today.

You're just butt hurt for me calling you out on the margins you make keeping av, home security and automation seem like some kind of voodoo the common man can't grasp.

Eta my state of 4k thread is about busting more of your sacred cows just like I did with wink so I understand the hate.

Yeah, if you don't count the hundreds of engineers working on hardware and software for thermostats, cameras, and smoke alarms.

You still want to claim this is just a couple of engineers?

forbes article

I'm a hardcore Android adherent, but call me crazy - I'm somewhat terrified at the prospect of Google "unifying" the IOT.

Your "Forbes" link is actually Fortune. This actual Forbes link says:
quote:

These few dozen Nest employees will now fall under the Google unit responsible for developing a unified “Internet of Things” platform.

quote:

You still want to claim this is just a couple of engineers?
Yeah.
quote:

Nest’s entire platform team will become part of Google
You highlighted the wrong word. The important ones are "platform team". As in, the people working on the IoT platform. Not the ones working on hardware. Not the ones working on operational software. Just the IoT platform team.
quote:

By moving Nest software developers over to Google payroll, Nest’s financial situation would improve dramatically
Funny, because the very next sentence in that article says:
quote:

It is unclear how many Nest employees the move affects.
So how the frick do they know how "dramatically" it will affect Nest's financial situation?

It very well could be a "dramatic" shakeup at Nest, but we can't know until more details come out. As of now, this looks to me like a no-brainer move to get the folks working on IoT at Nest to work with the folks working on IoT at Google. It just doesn't sound like big news. And it definitely doesn't sound like a "trainwreck".

But with your commentary you are misrepresenting the content of these articles you post.

Whatever Alphabet/Google/Nest knows about Nest's financial situation and how this move will affect it, they haven't said a word about it. The only source we have for this supposedly dramatic financial change is Dan and Leena over at Fortune, who apparently like to sensationalize things almost as much as you do.
