My laptop hard drive failed this past week (I recovered everything) and I'd like to start with an online backup company. Who's the best? Thanks for your help.

I use Crashplan Small Business, and added my elderly mom to the plan so I can keep her stuff saved away. It's more expensive than consumer outfits but business customers get better service and it doesn't cost that much extra since it's only two devices.

BTW, I can't recommend highly enough that you get a cheap second machine and use it to practice recovery every now and then. If you aren't really sure you know how to walk through the steps, you aren't truly protected. It's worth the time and money to practice. In theory you should be able to recover if your main machine simply vanishes into thin air.

If you have something like OneDrive or Google drive you can use a software like cloudberry to do managed backups.

I formerly used CrashPlan, but am transitioning to BackBlaze.

I do use Google Photos to back up my photos as well.

BackBlaze

Checked them out earlier. The reviews scared me off from them.

How many of you have had SSDs fail? We went 100% SSD about 3 years ago and have not had one failure in a 250+ machine environment.

We still backup desktops but TBH I have become out of practice in restoring them.

I haven't had more than 5 SSDs fail in a few years as well. I use acronis for encrypted backups. Mainly to protect against ransomware. Not sure what their cloud backup cost is though. We backup to a synology nas that auto backs up to another nas and/or Google cloud depending on the data importance.

I'm more concerned with ransomware, especially where it comes to the aforementioned elderly mom. Fortunately Crashplan does versioned backups so I can rewind selectively as needed.
