I'm looking to get a receiver to hook up existing speakers in my house and run outdoor speakers. I'd like to be able to control it and stream through an app on my phone. Can anyone recommend a good receiver in the $500 range?

Onkyo and Denon are decent brands in that price range. Both newer models should have phone apps.

Onkyo - TX-NR646
Denon - AVR-S710W

I've owned a few Onkyo receivers, and at least 3 of them had issues with capacitors or solder caused by too much heat. Be sure to get some decent ventilation or locate in an open area.

I haven't looked in a while so this may no longer be relevant. When I was looking for receivers in that range many of them only played an analog signal over Zone 2. Make sure to check that out when you are searching.

Onkyo - TX-NR646

These things have been bullet proof (knock on wood). Onkyo had some issue in the pass but the 2015 models have been trouble free. You can also look at the TX-NR545, pretty much identical to the 646 with less power and money.

Be sure the AVR you buy can play digital sources on Zone 2 or you will need a DAC.

I have a Yamaha 677 and it's been great. $370 on Amazon right now

Amazon link

I will also say that I owned 2 Denon's in the past, and they were fantastic receivers as well.

There is one flaw(to me) in the Yamaha I should mention. If I switch to either the AirPlay or Spotify input on Zone 2, it also switches the Zone 1 input as well. You can then simply switch your Zone 1 back to where it needs to be, but it's an annoyance that shouldn't have to happen IMO. Switching to any other Zone 2 input(radio, Pandora, analog, etc.) doesn't cause that to happen.

I was actually looking at the NR646 and the Yamaha 677. Sadly I don't know much about receivers so will both zones play over AirPlay? Also, will these be able to be stored in a cabinet or need to be out where the remote will work. A non glass cabinet.

646 will play AirPlay sources on both zones but not 2 different AirPlay sources at the same time on each zone. On zone two the AirPlay source can't come in on the HDMI (like a new Apple TV).

You can store it in a cabinet. Just download the Onkyo app to control it or get an IR kit.

I've had the onkyo 626 for about 3 years. It's a solid receiver that I'd recommend (or the newer model). I don't even use the remote. We use the phone app to control it.
