I picked up a yahama rxa750 yesterday for my outdoor music needs. The specs show it as a 7.2 channel receiver. I am only planning to have 4 total speakers. Two on the 7.2 channel setup and 2 on the alternate zone 2 set up. Will only having 2 speakers in a 7.2 channel setup have any effect on quality. This is for an outdoor patio and pool so movies and the like don't matter.

This setup sounds weird to me. Zone 2, based on your 2 speakers will be completely fine.

But for Zone 1, wouldn't you at least have a Right, Center and Left speaker setup (3 total speakers for Zone 1)?
Short answer to your question is no, this shouldn't cause any issues.

Just run it in stereo mode.

Ok the speakers I bought were sold in sets of two which is why I went with four instead of five. Will I lose anything when running the tv without a center speaker.

I guess I could run 3 speaks for zone 1 and 1 speaker for zone 2. Will that effect anything?

Zone 2 is only for Music under the patio so it does not need much. Probably make the neighbors happier too.

You should be able to go into the receiver's settings and tell it what speakers are connected. It will then process the sound appropriately.

If the receiver thinks you have a center channel connected, and you don't, then you'll miss out on a lot. Is zone 1 inside? You should pick up a center channel speaker for TV use. They are sold as a single speaker.

If you have 4 speakers, just put 2 speakers in zone 1 and 2 speakers in zone 2.

Make sure you set both zones to stereo.

You're not going to get surround sound, obviously. You pretty much need 5 speakers for surround sound, although some older stuff is mixed for 4 speakers.

Will any speaker serve as a center speaker or do I need a special speaker as a center speaker?

Get an actual center channel speaker. They are specifically tuned for voices.

Using a 2.1 system for watching TV and movies makes it very hard to hear voices clearly. Adding a center channel makes an enormous difference.

I'll add that the center speaker should be the same brand and from the same model line as the other two speakers. You want the front three speakers to be matched tonally.

Or just position the two front speakers correctly and listen to it all in 2.0 on the amp.

Thanks ill look and see if polk has an outdoor center speaker that matches the ones I got on amazon.(Not thinking they will) The good news is this is for an outdoor patio so there will be very few movies watched but to your point I do remember not being able to hear the announcers well watching football games when I had a shitty center speaker years ago.

I don't believe Polk makes an outdoor center speaker atleast in the atrium 4 line. Will a regular speak suffice in this situation. Sports and music only.

There is absolutely no reason to have a center speaker outside.

Do what Gaston said. It's the best advice given in this thread.

Thanks.

When you say front speakers are you referring to front channels? As in use the two channels marked front and disregard the channels marked surround front, surround back and center.

Just making sure as av is not my thing.

Yes. Front left and front right speakers with the amp set to stereo (2.0) mode.
