Need a new laptop for the wife. Trying to stay under $500

Ok so the Mrs needs a new laptop. She is in the medical field and primarily uses is for remotely accessing the VA network and other medical remote systems and for compiling PowerPoint presentations. Ideally, this laptop will last us 3-4 years. She currently uses a 2011 macbook pro that she was forced to buy as part of her educational experience. While it has done well, it is now showing its age and really slowing down and freezing often. We have no need (or budget) for the capability of a new MBP.
Otherwise, this laptop will see limited use for web browsing and the occasional picture viewing. It is great if it is capable of more than that, but honestly we use our phones and tablets for more casual things and for watching Netflix, etc...
Being lightweight and portable is a big bonus as is battery life because she will likely be transporting it to and from work. I think 13-15" would suffice. Any recs?
TLDR: need a laptop for remote access to VA and medical record servers and for Microsoft Office apps. 13-15" display, with weight and battery life a priority. $500ish budget.

Black Friday is upcoming, should find plenty of deals from Dell, HP, etc

Not a terrible deal
For an 8th gen i5 (you don't want anything before this), 8gb ram, 256gb SSD, 1080p touch panel, and just under 3lbs, this is a good deal

Thanks for the link.
Are those specs good baselines to use? 8th gen i5 and 8gb ram? Touch screen I dont care about and 128gb would.be way more than enough storage, but I am out of touch on processors and general ram needs.

Get HP or Dell. The rest suck.

Thoughts on this laptop? Brickseek indicates it is available nearby for $250. It is a little on the large side but still weighs less than her MBP. Seems to be a gaming laptop from maybe 2018? I gather that it is more than I'm looking for, but aside from the form factor is there a big downside to this:
HP Pavilion 15.6" Gaming Laptop
HP Pavilion 15.6" Gaming Laptop

Or this one for $390 according to Brickseek. Seems more in line with what I'm looking for from a portability standpoint:
HP Pavilion 15 Laptop 15.6" Touchscreen
HP Pavilion 15 Laptop 15.6" Touchscreen

Or this beast on sale for $450. Retail was $1700 apparently. Again, probably more than I need:
MSI GP63 Leopard-077 15.6" Performance Gaming Laptop

They are all decent deals but a few things to consider.
A gaming laptop is usually heavy and runs very hot. So if she plans on using on her lap, they usually aren't ideal.
128gb really isn't enough. Windows will eat up a lot of that.
You want an SSD for a hard drive. Makes a the difference for loading speed.
That first slickdeal link for the HP Envy was a really good deal.

This exclude the gaming laptops you are looking at.
Get the laptop Blue recommended. That's the perfect laptop for most people.

And the batteries suck on them

Fair enough. What's the main issue with the regular HP Pavilion I posted? Is it the HDD instead of an SSD? My wife says she wants lightweight and portable, but she mainly uses it at home. I'm thinking the 15" screen might be a higher priority over the weight at the end of the day if the weight is still acceptable.

You're going to hate the machine if it has a regular HDD. It'll be snail pace slow

There are real values in used Lenovo X series laptops. Lenovo's X220 is the last and most advanced laptop to use a real keyboard. I got mine used in 2015 for about 150 and have used it ever since, replacing the hard drive with a 1TB SSD and Windows 7 with Linux. It has enough horsepower to run Windows 8.1 or 10 if you wish. If you don't care about the keyboard, an X280 is a terrific option. Just get one with either 8gb or 16gb of RAM and a 512gb or larger SSD. You'll be set for a very long time.
She would probably quite happy with something like this:

You are not going to find any of those laptops that coco posted that are on clearance in stock at those walmart. They were cleaned out a few months ago. I bought one for my son and also picked up a desktop. Brickseek is wrong on the remaining stock

Shameless bump, but if OP still is interested, I picked up that 449 MSI today in Mobile, AL
so brickseek isn't completely wrong about limited stock around you
