My computer has teh AIDS (Windows 7 won't boot)

I have an old laptop I want to convert to gaming only. I tried to start it up after not using it for a long time and Windows won't load.
If I try to load normally it gets stuck on the Windows splash screen.
If I try to boot into Safe Mode it lists the drivers being loaded and stops after loading aswArDisk.sys - unforunately, there's no rhyme or reason to the order it loads the drivers so I don't know which driver is next and causing the problem.
If I do Last Known Good Configuration it gets stuck at the Windows splash screen. Same with Debugging Mode.
I tried removing the aswARDisk.sys file by booting the computer via a Linux USB drive, which allows me to see the Winblows files. That simply results in a very quick blue screen of death and an attempt to reboot.
If I try to launch startup repair, it loads to a blank black screen with a moveable cursor but doesn't respond to any inputs.
I also tried setting the BIOS back to an earlier date, but that hasn't helped either.
Any ideas on how to get Winblows to load?

Considering it's an old laptop, what kind of gaming do you plan on doing? What I'm getting at is since you're obviously not going to be running any new games, can you get by with just wiping it and installing Linux? Looks like a lot of the more popular old-ish games run under Wine, and of course there are lots of browser-based games. Also some games even have Linux ports, like a lot of Steam games I believe.

Unfortunately once it's stuck like that, there's not a lot you can do from the broken machine itself.
I've had luck by pulling the drive, mounting it on another machine, and running check disk on it. (chkdsk /r)
If that doesn't work - Win7 has a good non-destructive reinstall option. (Google is your friend for the steps)
Last resort would be to do a fresh install.

Civ 2, Madden (last PC version was 08), etc.

Clear the CMOS battery.

"aswARDisk.sys" is the driver for Avast Antivirus. Sounds like it's corrupted or has some type of conflict with recent update.
You need to access Windows recovery tools either via boot menu or with Windows recovery USB. Next you'll want to open command prompt.
In the Command Prompt window navigate to the drivers folder with this command:
cd %systemroot%\system32\drivers
Then delete the driver
del aswardisk.sys
Restart.
If that doesn't work try going back to the command prompt and running sfc /scannow command. If that doesn't work try bcdedit /repairbcd command.
If none of those work then you're probably shite out of luck and will need to backup your files by removing hard drive and using a SATA to USB cable to transfer files to a new installation.

Another option is to create a bootable USB drive of "Hirens boot CD". It has a lot of preloaded recovery tools and uninstallers. The latest version has Revo uninstaller loaded on it. Just run that or one of other uninstallers loaded on it and uninstall Avast Antivirus. After that try to reboot normally into Windows.
You'll want to use the latest version of "Hirens boot cd" if your computer is UEFI and may need to use an older version if it's Legacy.
