I have been an iPhone user since the very first one, and have owned just about every one of them since. Lately, I am using less and less of Apple's core software. I use Firefox for browsing, Office 365 for email/documents, Lightroom & Google for photos.

... but the one thing I use regularly is iMessage. I am very hesitant to switch to Android because iMessage (and texting), honestly, is the most used feature on my phone. 95% of the people I message are using Apple devices and all of them use iMessage. My family all uses Apple products and iMessage.

So for those brave enough to break away totally from Apple and become "green," how has the transition worked for you? Which app do you use? Can you still send and receive MMS from iphones? Other than deregistering iMessage, any issues you have had in this transition?

If you're in a bunch of group texts with your iphone friends be prepared to be kicked out. Not saying your phone will kick you out, but more than likely the group will start its own message without you because of your android. If you can convice the group to use a different messaging service other than iMessage it won't be a problem. Good luck with that though! Iphone's have made us stupid and not enough people are willing to branch out and see what else is out there.

I agree with this, but iPhone users will not voluntarily switch to chat apps when they have something that works fine and is tied to their phone number.

I am not worried being excluded, but what happens when you are already in an iMessage group chat and you turn it off? Will you still get the group text or does it disappear into the ether?

If I switch back, iMessage will be the reason. Not because it's superior, but because nearly everyone in my life has an iPhone. People are lazy as frick and will always take the path of least resistance.

I switched 4 years ago. Much happier with Android than iOS. I use Android messages. You can send and receive MMS with iOS devices just fine, but video files will be compressed to shite. So if they are sending out alot of videos it will suck.

I never had a problem with missing messages after switching, but I made sure to deactivate iMessage before the switch. As far as sending videos, I usually just do it through Google photos, but I'm almost always sending videos back and forth with my wife of our kids.

Good luck with the switch, if you are fed up with being trapped in the iPhone box, you will love Android.

If you have a Mac you can setup wemessage and use iMessage on an Android phone. I played with it a bit and it works really well. I sent my wife a few texts from a Pixel XL and it came into the iMessage conversation she and I have as an iMessage like it was sent from my iPhone. You do have to do a bit of port forwarding to get it to work outside your home network though.

Apple forces all of its users to use the apps they want and view content how and when they want.

Apple fanbois are communist sheep at heart. It's sickening.

Break free from the shackles of your Apple overlords and cast aside those who try to drag you back into the chains.

WeMessage will allow you to use iMessage on Android. You A. Need a Mac, B. will need to set up port forwarding, which sounds hard but can be done by watching a 5 minute youtube video. C. It routes through your Apple ID email, not a phone number.

It's not a perfect solution, but it works.

The only problem I had with the switch was on the sender's end. The first text they would send would try and send it to iMessage. They'd get an undeliverable message. They'd resend and it would come through to my android.

I had no problems being kept in group messages, but none of my group messages were iMessage exclusive users. All had a mix of Android/iPhone participants.

I don't really understand why people love iMessage so much. Maybe I never used it to it's fullness? I use the default android Messages app. It works just fine. I can send texts, pictures, videos, gifs, whatever. I guess the only thing I don't have are those facial recognition emoji things or whatever they are. Doesn't matter as I wouldn't use that anyways.

I still use Hangouts for texting. I don't get some texts in group texts when I'm the only Android in the group, but it's never bothered me as I hate group texts.

There's probably a better app out there for texting, but I'm a creature of habit and I like that can get texts on my laptop at work and not always reaching for my phone.
