What would be the best route to getting this setup. I would like to use it for (among other things) all backups (mac, iPhone/pad) and iPhoto’s with being to access them just like apples storage but for free.

There isn’t going to be anything to really match Apple’s cloud for that. You will have to use iTunes to back all those things up. So you will just basically need a computer at home that you hardwire your devices to, to back them up.

You can back your photos up through certain apps and other things like documents, but if you want full backups, iTunes is the way you have to go or iCloud.

You can use Plex for your photos. As far as backups go there isn't a way that I know of to have it back up to a personal server.

For backups are there not any good apps that can manage auto Wi-Fi backups to my Mac or NAS? If to my Mac only, I can do auto backup for the laptop that would catch the phone, no?

If I use plex for photos will it also manage the pics NAS running plex or do you have to manage it yourself?

Look into a Synology NAS device. It can be set as your Time Machine backup device for your Mac. I'm not sure what else you're wanting it to do.

I have done a full restore from TIme Machine after a hard drive failure and it worked flawlessly (but it took over 24 hours for a 2 TB drive).

Synology has a lot of plugins apps that can be added for different features.

Nextcloud is open source cloud platform you can setup for home use. If you have a domain or ddns and use let's encrypt https certs then you can point to it for remote https access. However, keeping it purely local has it's security benefits.

9.99/month for 2TB of iCloud storage solves this very, very easily.

I know, I’m just not trying to spend 10$ a month on storage if I can just do it myself at home and keep it somewhat simple and automated.

By getting the smaller GB iPhone and not paying per month for storage would cover the cost of the NAS in no time.

LINK

WD My cloud

Can get them in various TB sizes. Has an app that will automatically sync your pics and others, for whenever you want it to. Have had one for 2 years. No complaints.

Apple didn’t invent it, it didn’t even popularize it. Amazon is responsible for it becoming popularized.

What would be needed?

Google photos automatically grabs new photos.

Texts you can just get an app that backs them up.

Calls are from phone service

Apps are in the app store

Music is in hard drive if previously downloaded or in the purchase history

Files on the computer can have an external HDD that can use a batch file to copy the drive every night or run a RAID

Then just get a password app and make sure to note where everything is.

Can’t you make your iPhone/pad auto backup to my Mac with iTunes. Then Have the Mac auto backup to the NAS like a time capsul? Thus giving me backups of it all?

Really tho I have been having a iPhone since the 2nd one. I have pics and contacts that go that far back. I have had phone brick or brake or get lost. So a backup of it is important to me.
