I was mostly talking about for entry level stuff. If you get your CCNA you will almost assuredly get hired over someone with just an A+ an 1-3 years experience.

those two applicants wouldn't even be competing for the same job

And that's exactly what I'm trying to say in this thread.
If he cant get a job with his AS then an A+ wont help him at all. An AS from BRCC is far better recognized in BR.

until the interview and it becomes clear you have no real world experience putting those certs to use, and you just loaded up on certs
Exactly. I have been told straight out I didn't have enough experience for an entry level job. If a two year degree isn't enough, then A+ seems like the next step. No one has specifically asked me about it but it couldn't hurt.

must be market specific. you'd have 3 offers in DFW

Honestly skip A+ all together and just take S+ 501
The newer security plus exams use the basic building blocks from Network + and A+
Tons of questions that if you don’t have an understanding of hardware/software (A+) and basic networking you won’t get them right.

We might have mentioned this before, but it you're having trouble with A+, Sec+ is not your next step...

What's your end game?
Since you are just starting look at openings where you would like to work.
See what they require.
Use whatever you have learned.
Write programs.
Use SQL.
Whatever coding you learned, keep it up.
Make sure you know English grammar. Your first interviews will be a chance to show off that big brain.
Practice interviews.
Take time off from life and learn something every day.
Look at dice for your target area.

I've been looking for a year. At this point my options are to give up and just take whatever job I can get or move. I want to try to improve my credentials a bit before I completely give up.
I've been watching watching Professor Messer's A+ review series and got a book from the library. The library's selection of computer books is abysmal btw.

Get a book off of Amazon. They're only like $30-50

Was not aware of this. Will be doing a few practice tests later.

A+ is no longer part of 8570
Correct.
ANd the new Network+ exam is no cakewalk.
OP, A+ still has value and if I were you, I would get it.
Can you pass a background check? Decent credit, no felony arrests?
You are thinking along the right path, IMO.
