Want to get a beginners drone to mess around with at the house and camp, would like one that you can connect a phone to the remote control and takes decent video/photos. Budget $200-$250.

Extra batteries, chargers, accessories, and propellers a plus in that price range.

Look at the used market. There’s lots of people selling drones with minimal flight time on them. They buy one only to find it sitting in a closet in a couple of months time - you can get bored quickly of flying over your neighborhood for the 20th time .

I’ve never bought used, but I’d probably meet the seller in the Bass Pro parking lot and have them fly it for you to show you it’s in working order.

ETA- Let is know what you get.

I bought this one for my kids. It works very well and really easy to fly.

Got it in today and we played around with it a bit. Had a lot of fun getting used to the controls and flying around the neighborhood. Still haven’t figured out how to do fpv, this would be a dealbreaker if I can’t get that working.

Another pretty big disappointment was the flight time. Didn’t time it when we were playing with it today so I fully charged both batteries and just went outside to time how long they lasted. First one I just took off and let it hover: 6m08s. Second one we flew it round a bit, highest it could go, around the yard, etc: 6m22s.

Are my expectations too high in this area? 6-6.5 min seems really short.

DJI is the best. Spark is their entry level consumer model. Starts at $400. Refurbs are cheaper. Better deals on eBay.

That time seems about right; these things have to move a lot of air.

We paid about $1,800 and $2,800 for the two that my brother and I use for work and we only get about 25 minutes of flight time out of them.

The more you fly it though, the better you’ll get at using your 6-6.5 minutes. I’ll go to a job site with 3 or 4 batteries and it’s extremely rare that I’ll ever fly enough to use more than two.

Also, these batteries need to be used several times before they reach their full potential. After 6-10 discharge/charge cycles you might find you get an extra minute or so out of them.

Thanks guys. Like I said, this thing is really cool and fun to fly. I’ve got a month to play with it before the prime 30 days run out.

If I were to jump up to a spark 2 (or also I’ve seen good reviews for parrot bebop 2’s), what does one of those give me over this basic model?

I really enjoy flying so again-it's money well spent for me. Good luck to you. The view with the dji goggles is night/day vs.the other goggles I have and the cost is basically the same.

I don't have any experience with the Spark line or the Parrot line, but I'll check out their specs and see if I can sift through the marketing wank for you. And I might have a buddy who has flown those so I'll see what he has to say.

This is a great, inexpensive drone, packed with features. Replacement parts, and add on accessories are cheap. Lots of mods you can do to the H501S. It will fly way further, and way higher than what the manufacturer claims. Tons of YouTube videos on what is possible with this drone. I've had it for a year, and have been very impressed for the 130 bucks (new) I paid for it on eBay. I've crashed it a couple of times, once from about 150ft up, and another from 60. No serious damage either time. Just broke a prop and a couple of the prop guards. Both crashes were my own fault for flying too high/far and running out of juice before I could get back. Good quality 1080p video and pics.

Been having some fun with the drone I bought but I’ve decided to return for something better. The camera and battery live was really disappointing. Also when it got past 100’ away it wasn’t really responsive.

I’m leaning hard towards the dji spark. Hopefully I can get it put together for $400-$500.

I bought a Spark last weekend and have been enjoying it. I got the fly more combo, it's hard not to spend the extra money for the extras.

I have a Mavic Air. It's more expensive but you get 4k and longer range/battery life than the Spark.

The Spark is still a good drone though. Make sure you get the controller and 2 extra batteries and you won't be disappointed

I thought the Spark's range was fairly limited?

I said frick it and got a Mavic 2 Pro back March with the Fly More kit. One of the best purchases I’ve ever made. The drone is fun but the camera is the best part. The pictures/videos are incredible.

It is, and so is the Mavic Air's. That's my biggest gripe with the Mavic Air, from my experience, even in a clear line of sight and no obstruction, the actual range falls well short of the advertised range. I think its because it uses Wi-Fi so there is a lot of interference.

However since the Spark is a beginner's drone, it's probably not ideal for the target audience to be flying it way far away, so it makes sense. If range is really a big deal for you, you need to get a drone with OccuSync.
