Lithium from seawater

Interesting news popped up over the weekend on extracting lithium from seawater instead of ground based mines, and doing so economically. It's a pretty big deal IMO b/c one of the legit points that EV doubters have is that lithium mining is dirty and isn't sourced domestically as much as we'd like. Well, we have plenty of ocean access. Lithium from seawater has been a pipe dream for a while until this. It's also interesting that this research was funded by the Saudis - they know which direction the future is headed and it's not more oil.
I'm sure this will take at least a few years to really refine and become operational but it's another positive step in the tech associated with making batteries more cleanly, and that's a good thing.

sounds like a better path for lithium for sure.

.2 PPM...
Sure we have a ton of water but .2 parts per MILLION takes a lot of water to get a little bit of lithium

Why does the concentration matter if it costs less money and energy to produce a given quantity of product?

Yeah, it's very dilute obviously. But this sounds like it would probably be part of a multiple product operation. Ocean water processing to mine a variety of metals, and then run the remnant through desalinization for increasingly valuable fresh water.
I can see why this could be very, very attractive to the Saudis.
