because one tap to connect bluetooth to my Onkyo and a second tap on 'google music' is so much more difficult.
Bluetooth is only good for 30', depending on how big your house is, that won't work very well if you're moving from room to room.
I'm not familiar with what phone you have, but on my iPhone, it's literally two taps to put any audio on my 5.1 system. Even is my AVR is off, when I tap to send to AirPlay, it wakes the receiver and immediately starts playing.

onkyo NR626, android nexus 5, jawbone jambox, poineer BT car stereo, qi-enabled alarm clock with BT speaker and a chromecast.
so to answer your question, i can open the onkyo app and browse to the music on my NAS in like 2 clicks..or i can open my phone, select which device (my car, jambox if i'm going outside or to the garage to work, etc.), chromecast if i want eye-candy in the bedroom while my music plays or the onkyo when i'm donnstairs in the family room where the 5.1 is located.
its literally as difficult as selecting which device i want to play music on and what source (songza, google music, pandora, etc). if i want more control, i'll launch the onkyo app on my phone and play the music off the NAS directly.
eta its not difficult and wifi isn't always the correct answer. i can also link from my laptop via bluetooth to the onkyo or fire up the WDTV or XBOX 360 and play the music from there.
my wife and son both have nexus 4s, my wife has an ipad2, my daugther has an old android mytouch and an ipad mini. all of these devices can connect just as easily and they're running their own music libraries.
literally..having music going 24/7 has never been easier. we have about 1,000 possible combinations of devices & music.

I'm glad you started this thread. I'm about to build some houses and I wanted to make them "Smart Home Ready" as a selling feature. I was already planning on doing thermostats and Garage Door Opener. I'm glad someone mentioned the sprinkler, I didn't know about those.
I plan to add some additional data drops for WAPs to increase wifi reception. Any other suggestions?

We have several of the wifi wall jacks and light switches. Nice to be able to turn on a light or 2 before you get home, etc

IP Cameras. At the current price of $69 on amazon for an HD camera that twirls around, nightvision, can set alarms and generate emailed photos or video clips based on movement or sound, accesible from a web browser or phone, etc...everyone should have at least one in their house even if you don't have a baby you need to monitor.
Which ones are you referring to on Amazon. This is a great thread, but could have been better with links to the products you were discussing, or at least examples. I'm researching routers on cnet, too, since my current one keeps crashing.
Do I need an AC router, N900 or N600?

sorry, its actually jumped up to $75 today, the Foscam 19821W V2 is the HD camera you'll see a billion review about. i know that damn thing inside and out so I can help you out.
put it in your watchlist..i managed to buy it for $65 last week so if its in your list, i think amazon notifies you if the price goes up or down.

dont get too ambitious. i feel in alot of ways this is the mid 1990s all over again and x10 just hit the market.
first, *NOBODY* is the clear cut 'apple' of home automation yet. WINK is incredibly super dirt cheap for a hub..but they have crashed and burned miserably getting that off the ground so you're going to see nothing but frothing-at-the-mouth customer reviews wherever you turn.
on the other hand, its just software so it can get better.
i am still leery of jumping in on the smart home stuff despite the giant 16 FOOT home depot display for WINK.

Time Warner Cable and AT&T.
I was about to jump on the ASUS N65 until I read about all of the overheating issues. Any suggestions?

bump. the home depot $49 "WINK HUB PLUS 2 BULBS" is back in stock online (in original post).
i'm going to pull the plug on this just because i want to be a guinea pig for you bozos on here
seriuosly though, i've been on a tech kick lately so why not go ahead & add the hub. surely with all the marketing behind this WINK shite they'll sort out the software at some point.

I figured you asked because they are giving routers away. Assuming that doesn't work, what do you like? It looks like the ASUS stuff performs the best when it's working, but has some issues.
Is there a good site to look up my electronics to see if they would benefit from AC bandwidth?

I've got the Iris hub from lowes. It's not bad. The camera system absolutely sucks though. They give you no ability to store video for more than a day or so. Also they've turned off the microSD card slots on the cameras for some unknown reason.
I like the functionality of their systems to set timers, motion activated lights and power switches, remote triggers, etc.

I just bought a Honeywell wifi thermostat and love it. It responds faster than my old one and I live the ability to sit my lazy arse on the sofa or in bed to change the settings. It was 99 at home Depot on Highland

these wink enabled outlets and switches would be badass if they monitored power usage.

I have a Asus rt-ac66u router at home and am interested in the wall outlet WiFi extenders. Do I run a hard line to the extender and then it broadcasts from there or are they just repeaters?
We have trouble picking up the signal in the back of the house and we are also adding a patio in the spring and signal out there would be great for music/Chromecast.

You seem to be the guru on this stuff and I'm pretty tech savvy for a layperson but I am interested in the Wink system.
My question is about the bulbs - the price is obviously pretty steep but I'm assuming these bulbs have a long life. But how long of a life?
I live in a 100+ year old house and what I can do with wiring new lighting is difficult so I rely on lots of lamps, especially in our den that is fairly dark.
I would like to try the Wink set-up but I have to convince my husband that the ROI is worth it.
Any talking points you have to make my technophobe husband but in would be very much appreciated.

I've been using a TPlink extender and have had moderate success. It crashes a lot, but simply power cycling fixes it. It also has a cat5 output which allows it to act as a waypoint for my microcell and xbox.
