FWIW I was the same way and haven't used a mouse since I switched to this macbook.

It really is astonishing how no Windows OEM has yet replicated the Macbook trackpad

How do you convince yourself to pay twice the price for an inferior product to a windows computer?

I don't know, let me ask my 5 year old MacBook Air that despite 5 years of heavy use, literally works as well as the day I got it out of the box and has never required tech support or servicing.

I've had too many random lockups, slowdowns, blue screens, etc. to believe this is true.

Don't know what to tell you. If I get a blue-screen or lockup, it's because I'm in the middle of stress-testing an overclock that's obviously unstable, or there's obvious hardware failure that can happen to any piece of equipment. I'm not suggesting that Windows is better for the less-savvy, because it's not. I'm just saying it's extremely possible to have a stable Windows system if you know what you're doing.

That is still not advocacy for Windows, because frankly I think more of the general population should closely examine whether OS X would do everything they need to do and consider making the switch if they can afford it. The cost/benefit is subjective, because for all practical purposes as applicable to the normal/non-tech-savvy crowd, you're not going to be able to run OS X on anything but a Mac, so OS X is the only consideration at play. There is no BOM for the perceived benefits of an operating system.

That Mac trackpad takes some getting used to, but damn it's nice once you get all the multitouch gestures figures out and they become relfexive.

bought my daughter an ACER chromebook for $79 that has an 8 hour battery life.

she freaking loves it. she's always listening to music, watching netflix, doing all her homework with gdocs, etc.

yeah yeah i know..its a stupid chromebook and doesn't do any 'real' computer-stuff but i'm telling you i'm incredibly jealous of it when my brand new freaking dell work laptop barely gets 2 hours of battery life and takes forever to wake up when it goes to sleep.

the chromebook embodies what a laptop should be ...useful, simple, cheap, light..and a full day out of the battery.

I will be getting a Chromebook soon myself... if you are OK with using g docs instead of office, it's a phenomenal machine.

I still wish the average user knew about them.

On the original topic: if you have the money I recommend an apple computer as a general user. General users are way too stupid to be given the reigns like windows offers their users. I will say though, the biggest complaints about windows are super overstated "the news of my death have been greatly exaggerated". I have owned 2 windows laptops and a custom built desktop for over 5 years, they all still run extremely well, and bsod is a fairy tail with them.

ETA: also, don't buy a Mac expecting the same results as others in this thread. I work in IT, and our help desk gets 3 Mac problems for every 1 windows problem.

Let's do the retest in 2 or 3 years of service. All of my apple stuff still works like its brand new 2 to 3 years in. Some of my Windows stuff still does. That difference, is worth a couple hundred dollars. The ability to buy and forget about problems for 4-5 years is worth the difference all day long and twice on Sunday.

Apple fan boys are so damn ignorant. I still have my Acer aspire from 2012 that's running like a champ while also running 24/7 minecraft server for the past year.

Huge fan of Chromebooks, especially for an organizational rollout (such as a school). So easy to administrate and maintain. When paired with google classroom and GAFE, it's a really powerful tool that, imo, puts most really expensive learning platforms to shame.

The main drawback, for education, is that you currently can't install the Zoom software, which a lot of distance learning uses.

I actually get pretty pissed when I try to use my work laptop the same way.

Exactly mirrors my feelings when I have to do maintenance on my parents laptops every so often. Windows is fine and the keyboard is probably better than the one on my mac, but that god damn trackpad with the plastic bumps causes me to have to restrain myself from putting my foot through the screen. I'm not an angry person, but I have shouted at my Mom's computer because of how godawful the trackpad is (Not my proudest moment).

Last year I went and bought a Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro with an i7, SSD, pretty much as good as you could get and there's been one problem after another. Drivers, connect-ability, display trouble.. OSX and Apple products in general hold up better with fewer issues. Just my personal experience though.

This mimics my experience. It's not that I ultimately had any long term trouble, but my PC experiences lately have just been finicky. Granted, better than they were when I used PCs exclusively and they started falling apart after 18 months (pre 2010), but just more annoying to use than my Macs.

I've had a similar experience. I bought my wife a dell laptop about 5 years ago that was nothing but problems... Trackpad, dvd drive, wifi card, etc.

Bought her Lenovo yoga a year ago.... Bloat ware, quirky trackpad, creaky hinge.

I've had zero problems with my 2011 MacBook Pro

I don't understand how people can go through even cheap PC laptops so quickly. I have a 3 laptops still perfectly fine(one with a screen I cracked) just sitting in my office. It is not fricking rocket science to keep these things running fine. I set up my mom with a cheap laptop last year, installed an SSD, gave her a few instructions and she couldn't be happier.
