My wife (no pics) wants to get into the laser engraving hobby and i have no idea about these platforms. She will want to cut thin wood material as well. Any ideas on a middle of the pack type machine that won't break the bank but will perform well. Also will a CO2 or diode laser be best. Thanks

Being told to get into a specific hobby is a recipe for disaster. Are you interested in making it a HOBBY? Otherwise, she's just giving you a job.

Look at something like the Gweike or a bigger OMTech over glowforge where you can use lightburn.

I apologize. Can't read today with this horrific storm on the way.

But you're the one trying to figure out which machine to get and how to get going.

If you want to do glass, you need CO2, it will be big, like huge. Is she aware of that? If you want to do medal, you'll need Fiber, which can't do glass. Diode's are good for wood only.

I know a few people that have businesses in the industry, good luck. Most people that make money either have long running businesses with good rep on amazon, or they are retired so they have all day to perfect extremely specialized pieces for hardly any margin.

What kind of projects and how big are they?

For C02 lasers, I use a K40 type (replaced the controller board so power can be software controlled) with a few modifications... works great for up to a cutting board size.... wine glasses and cups with a rotary axis.

I have a 20w diode laser as well, I don't really use it for anything... I find the CO2 is better for most. Although I might build a frame for a bigger diode laser to do larger format stuff like 1Mx1M.

Either way it's a rabbit hole for a hobby.

So i got into laser engraving/cutting about 18 months ago. I now have 4 lasers. The type of laser will depend on what she is cutting or engraving and the size of the projects. I started with a diode. It was good for a while, but got the co2 lasers and they do everything the diode was doing faster.

I’m doing this on the side, not my real job. I have basically used every dime I have made to buy more equipment and materials. I plan to get a fiber laser next year and that should hold me for awhile.

There are tons of youtube channels about these things.
